HP Scanjet 5200C Scanner Family - Setting up and Installing the Scanner in Microsoft (R) Windows 98 Purpose Install the HP scanning software Purpose This document details the HP Scanjet 5200C scanner installation procedure. The drivers for the HP Scanjet 5200C scanner can be found on the HP Scanjet Scanner CD-ROM in the /app/drivers folder. To order a replacement installation CD, contact HP software distribution . To download a version of HP scanning software, refer to the HP support document Drivers, Patches, and Software Downloads for Windows XP, Me, 2000 Professional, NT 4.0, 98, 95, 3.1x . Install the HP scanning software 1. Close all programs (except Microsoft(R) Windows) and insert the HP Scanning Software CD-ROM. The Installation Program will start automatically. NOTE: If the install program does not start, click Start , Run , and type D:\SETUP.EXE (where D is the letter of the CD-ROM drive.) 2. From the menu, select Install Scanning Software . 3. Select Next when the Welcome screen appears. 4. Select Next on the Software License Agreement. 5. When Confirm Installation Settings appears, select Next . NOTE: It is important to look at Space Required and Space Available to make sure that the computer has enough hard drive space available to install the scanning software. 6. Select Next on Select Program Folder . The Interface Selection screen will appear if the computer has a USB port. By default, USB will be selected during installation. If choosing to connect the scanner to the computer with the Parallel connection instead, change the dot to Parallel . NOTE: If USB does not appear as an option in the previous step, then the setup program did not detect a USB Host Controller, or USB Root Hub on the computer. If USB capability is on the PC, and USB is the desired connection, contact the PC's manufacturer to confirm that USB is operating correctly, then rerun the setup program, starting at Step 1. 7. At this point, the software installation will begin. When the files have finished copying, a prompt will ask to select an Operation Mode. Select Energy Star or Faster Lamp Warmup , then select Next . A prompt will ask to locate the cable. Check the diagram on the screen to make that the correct cable was selected to connect the scanner to the computer. After locating the correct cable, select Next . 8. When Setup Complete appears, select Finish . When the computer has fully shut down, connect the scanner to the PC with the interface cable. NOTE: The scanner comes with a USB cable and a Parallel cable. If USB was selected during the software installation, connect the scanner to the PC with the USB cable. If Parallel was selected, connect the scanner to the PC with the parallel cable. 9. Once the scanner cable has been connected, unlock the scanner by sliding the lever on the back of the scanner to the left. (For illustration, see installation steps on the placemat.) 10. Connect the power cord to the scanner; then connect the power cord to a surge protector or grounded wall outlet. This turns on power to the scanner. 11. Restart the computer. NOTE: Connecting Printers: A printer may be attached to the extra port on the back of scanner, provided the scanner itself is attached to the computer by the parallel cable. This port is supported for use with printers only. For other parallel devices (such as a zip drive), HP recommends adding another parallel port to the PC for that device. A printer may not be attached to a scanner that is connected to the PC with the USB cable. 12. After booting up, Windows 98 should detect new hardware, identify it as the HP Scanjet 5200C scanner, and ask for drivers. If the HP Scanning Software CD-ROM is still in the drive, the drivers should be located automatically and installed. NOTE: If Windows says it could not find a file, make sure the HP Scanning Software CD-ROM is in the CD-ROM drive. Type D:\app\drivers in Copy Files From at the bottom, where D: is the drive letter of the CD-ROM (the drive letter may be different). The scanner should now be installed.
