These instructions are for installing the HP scanning software patch in MS Windows Me when using the original, non-Windows Me compatible HP scanning software with an HP Scanjet scanner connected by a Universal Serial Bus (USB) interface. If you have obtained a new HP scanning software CD that is compatible with Windows Me, follow the original installation instructions that came with the scanner. If you have already installed the HP Scanning Software in Windows Me, and the scanner is not working, follow the uninstall instructions located at the end of this document before attempting to reinstall the scanner and its software. CAUTION: If you are uncomfortable performing any steps in this document, please call HP Customer Care, or your PC manufacturer, when applicable. Contacting HP technical support For information about contacting HP technical support, e-mail support, self help tools, and other service related information, click contact hp (see Figure 1) in the hp customer care box on the left navigation bar of the browser window. Figure 1: Contact hp Step 1: Enable Universal Plug and Play 1. From the Windows Desktop, click Start , Settings , then Control Panel . 2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs , then click the Windows Setup tab. 3. Select the Communication category to highlight it, then click Details . 4. Place a check mark next to Universal Plug and Play, then click OK . 5. Close all open windows, then restart the PC. NOTE: If a check mark is present, go to Step 2. There is no need restart the PC. Step 2: Connect the scanner 1. Insert the HP Scanning Software installation CD into the CD-ROM. 2. Click Exit on the error message screen that appears regarding Enabling USB Ports . If an Enabling USB Ports message does not appear, skip number 3 and go to number 4. NOTE: If the HP Scanning Software comes up with an X over USB and will allow only parallel installation, disregard the message, and continue with the installation. 3. Completely shut down the PC. 4. Connect the scanner to the PC by following the steps below: 1. Connect the USB cable to the PC and the scanner. 2. Connect the scanner power cord. 3. Lift the lid, and verify that the lamp is coming on inside the scanner. 4. Restart the PC. Step 3: Install the scanner drivers and the HP scanning software 1. While restarting the PC, Windows will find new hardware for the Scanjet Scanner and begin installing the drivers. NOTE: If the computer finds New Hardware but does not ask for the drivers, skip to Step 4: Manual installation of the HP Scanning Software .If new hardware is not found, contact HP for further assistance. 2. Click Specify the Locations of the Drivers to install the scanner drivers then click Next . 3. In the Specify Location field, click Browse , choose the CD-ROM drive, then click Next . 4. Click No when asked to keep any current versions of files on system. 5. Click Finish . The software installation will automatically launch. Follow the screen prompts to install the HP scanning software. 6. Restart the PC and try scanning. Step 4: Manual installation of the HP Scanning Software 1. With the HP Scanning software installation CD in the CD-ROM drive, click Start , then Run The Run window will appear. 2. In the Open field, type D:\SETUP.EXE (where D:\ is the drive letter associated with the CD-ROM drive). 3. Follow the screen prompts to install the HP scanning software. 4. Restart the PC and try scanning again. What if a red X appears on the scanner icon in the task bar? 1. Right-click My Computer , then Properties . The System Properties window will open. 2. Click the Device Manager tab, then look for SCSI Controllers . 3. Double-click SCSI Controllers . The SCSI Controllers Properties window will open. 4. Highlight EPST SCSI Controller , then click Remove . Click Yes on the Confirm Device Removal window. 5. Close the System Properties window. 6. From the Windows Desktop, click Start, then Run . The Run window will open. 7. In the box labeled open , type MSCONFIG and then click OK . The System Configuration window will open. 8. Select the Startup tab and then uncheck HPPPT or HP Parallel Port Test . 9. Click Apply , OK , and then Yes to restart. 10. When the PC has completely restarted, try scanning again. Download HP scanning software and patches for Windows operating systems To find the Windows Me Update patch, refer to HP Support document HP Scanjet - Driver, Download, and Patches Available for Your HP Scanjet Scanner and Microsoft (R) Operating Systems . Follow the installation instructions accompanying the patch to download and install it in Windows Me. Instructions for uninstalling the scanner and scanning software Step 1: Use Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel 1. Click Start , highlight Settings , and then click Control Panel . NOTE: In Windows Me on the left side of Control Panel, you may have to click View all Control Panel Options to see all of the icons. 2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs . 3. In the Add/Remove Programs dialog box, select HP Precision Scan (LT, LTX, or Pro) . 4. Click Add/Remove . 5. Click Yes to All when asked "Would you like to remove all shared files?" 6. Click No if asked to restart the PC. Step 2: Removal of remaining Scanjet files 1. Click Start , highlight Find , and then click Files or Folders . 2. In the Search for file folders Named field, type: Hewlett-Packard*.* 3. In the Look In field, select Local Hard Drive(s) . Click Search Now . Windows will perform a search and display the results on the right-hand side of the window. 4. On the right side, double-click the Hewlett-Packard folder and then click the Precision Scan (LT, LTX, or Pro) folder to highlight it. 5. Press DELETE to send the file to the Recycle Bin. 6. In the Search for file folders Named field, type Scanjet*.* . 7. In the Look In field, select Local Hard Drive(s) . Click Search Now . Windows will perform a search and display the results on the right-hand side of the window. 8. On the right-hand side, click the Scanjet folder to highlight it. 9. Press DELETE to send the file to the Recycle Bin. 10. Close all windows and programs. 11. Right-click the Recycle Bin icon. 12. Click Empty Recycle Bin . Step 3: Restart in Safe Mode 1. Click Start , then Run . The Run window will open. 2. In the box labeled Open , type: MSCONFIG and then click OK . The System Configuration window will open. 3. Select the Advanced button toward the bottom. 4. Place a check mark next to Enable Startup Menu . 5. Click OK ,thenclick OK again. 6. Choose Yes to restart the PC. 7. Watch the monitor carefully as the PC restarts. When the Windows Me Startup Menu appears, choose 3 for Safe Mode. 8. Press ENTER. Step 4: Remove the hardware from the Device Manager 1. Right-click My Computer , then Properties . The System Properties window will open. 2. Select the Device Manager tab. 3. In the list of devices, click the plus (+) sign next to Imaging Device , then click the scanner to highlight it. 4. Click Remove . Click Yes when the Confirm Device Removal window appears. Remove all devices listed under Imaging Devices in the Device Manager. 5. Click OK , then Close to the close the System Properties window. Step 5: Return to normal startup 1. Click Start , then Run . The Run window will open. 2. In the box labeled Open , type: MSCONFIG and then click OK. The System Configuration window will open. 3. Select the Advanced option toward the bottom. 4. Remove the check mark next to Enable Startup Menu . 5. Click OK , then click OK again. 6. Choose Yes to restart the PC.
