Additional Configuration Information:
This OS/2 Certification report is provided by Dell Computer Corporation and all certification testing was done in the Dell Server Custom Engineering lab in Round Rock, Texas, USA in a dedicated local Ethernet based OS/2 network environment using the OS/2 Certification test kit 4.1 updated to 4.5 from the IBM certification web site.
The onboard PCI Ethernet network card was used during the OS/2 Certification but the Intel Pro100+ PCI Ethernet NIC was also stress tested in the same environment in prior and later tests. The configuration was 100Mbit at Half-Duplex but the card also runs at Full-Duplex.
The video choice during the installation was Super VGA. Power Management was NOT enabled. The CDROM drive is IDE and was enabled in OS/2 by the IBM1S506.ADD driver along with the IBMIDECD.FLT.
Since the onboard NIC is often recognized by the OS/2 as an Intel NIC, the 3Com Etherlink II was chosen during the installation so that the copy process of the Intel driver would work correctly. During the installation of the OS that meant remarking out the MACS line to keep the system from hanging during the installation. This is the prefered method since accepting an IBM OEM driver often hinders the installation of the real Intel drivers later.
Once the OS was installed, the Intel driver was copied over within the MPTS configuration program and then the driver was changed and the system rebooted. This setup used a 100Mbit half-duplex Ethernet switch. The PROTOCOL.INI file was coded to force this setting to ensure networking stability as were all other systems in the networking environment.
The PERC2/DC is an advanced 64bit dual channel PCI RAID controller. The OS/2 driver is PEDGE2DC.ADD and the OS/2 array manager utility is PEDGE2DC.EXE. The monitor.cmd launches PEDGEMON.EXE which sends alerts to FFST LOG and Netfinity if there are any changes to the controller or drives or array. This controller was used with RAID 10 with read and write caching ON.
All of these utilities along with the driver are distributed by Dell. You can find this on the dell web site and on the Dell Server Assistant CD if you have an updated copy. If you can not find these for some reason, please submit a request to Russell_Woodland@dell.com and he will send you the drivers/utilties. Dell Server Support in the USA will also have a copy of these that they can email you if you call and request it. This set of driver/utilties is distributed worldwide to all the Dell IBU sites so if you are outside the USA, these are available from them. This set works on the following OS/2 versions:
SERVER Versions:
OS/2 Warp Server for e-business
OS/2 Warp Server Advanced Ver 4.0 SMP
OS/2 Warp Server Advanced Ver 4.0
OS/2 Warp Server Ver 4.0
CLIENT (desktop) Versions-
OS/2 Warp 4
OS/2 Warp 3 Connect
These drivers were UPDATED on the two install diskettes from FixPak 42 and during the installation they were also copied to C:\OS2 *and* C:\OS2\BOOT before every reboot to the hard drive since the CD drivers are out of date and get recopied to sabotage the installation:
IBM1S506.ADD
IBMIDECD.FLT
OS2DASD.DMD
OS2CDROM.DMD
CDFS.IFS
Copied to C:\OS2 before every reboot to the hard drive during installation since the CD drivers are out of date and get recopied to sabotage the installation:
HPFS.IFS
The OS/2 Certification process does not certify huge partitions such as 32Gb, 45GB or 60GB. For such huge partitions you will need the HPFS.IFS from FixPak 42 or higher plus the FDISK, FORMAT, CHKDSK and FDISKPM. Create a maximum of 2047 for the boot partition (C:) and once you are up, then create the larger partion and format it with the newer programs from FixPak 42 or higher but only AFTER the OS is properly installed. You can copy these to C:\OS2 during the installation phase, and after it is complete to ensure only those are used for creating and formatting such large partitions. A new FixPak for LAN Server might also be required to enable proper formating of huge partitions with HPFS and the entire FixPak 42 or higher might also be reqired.
The RAID test in the OS/2 Certification test software does not recognize this controller so the same method was used to test it that we have done since getting directions from IBM on how they tested our original PERC controller on the Dell PE 2200 and PE 4200. We simply simulate a drive failure during copy process and see if it rebuilds and reboots- but we also check our OS/2 array manager to see if it detects the problem, see if the alarm goes off and also if the monitor program notifies on-screen and sends alerts- and this all works great.
On this Dell PowerEdge 2450/733 several test programs ran to generate data transfers on the hard drives and then one of the drives in the RAID 10 array was pulled out. This caused an alarm which we then silenced with the array manager software. That program also detected the degredation. When we reinserted the drive, a rescan with the array manager program showed the status changed automatically to rebuild and the rebuild changes were reflected also in the pedgemon output via percentage numbers to the screen and array status change alerts were sent and showed up in the Netfinity alert popup. When this completed the system was shutdown and a reboot was done plus other wam and cold reboots. This was all done BEFORE the OS/2 Certification testing was started so the system completed all tests after an array rebuild operation. This procedure was also used again in both test phases- Domain Controller and Additional Server.
