Additional Configuration Information:
This OS/2 Certification used the same install diskettes that were used on the Dell PowerEdge 2400 when it was re-certified with the Dell PERC 2/SC single channel batteryless RAID card. Therefore, the same FixPak 42 basedev drivers were used on the installation diskettes. The same AIC7870.ADD driver and OS2CDROM.DMD driver were also used; the AIC7870.ADD came from the Adaptec web site and is an older driver since the newer ones are too large to easily fit on the diskette #1, plus they also often fail on bootup giving a message such as 'Internal Processing Error'. The OS2CDROM.DMD used is one which IBM fixed so that multi-session writes can be properly read (used on NEC SCSI CDROM drives only and is not required on IDE).
The video choice was Super VGA instead of the autodetect ATI choice since the video driver on the CD media for OS/2 Warp Server is out of date for the ATI video chip on the motherboard.
The NIC driver initially chosen was the 3Com Etherlink II and that driver was REM'd out of the config.sys so that after the OS was installed, we could install the correct Intel driver and change to it. Sometimes if you don't do this you can't remove the old Intel drivers.
The HPFS386.INI file was also changed on about the third reboot since this version miscalculates the amount of memory to use for the cachesize variable. This is due to the fact it detects a dual CPU capable machine and it's a well known 'feature' of this version. Otherwise the system would not reboot claiming it is out of memory. The other symptom encountered sometimes is continuous disk thrashing when opening any OS/2 windows if it reboots. These are known problems in this version of OS/2; the SMP version does not do this. Set it to something normal like 1/4 of real system memory. We used 64000 for 64MB on this 1024MB system since the integers are multiples of 1K.
This OS/2 Certification used the same Dell PERC2/DC 64bit PCI dual channel RAID card as many other Dell PowerEdge Server Certifications. It also uses the same PEDGE2DC.ADD OS/2 driver, the same PEDGE2DC.EXE OS/2 array utility and the same MONITOR.CMD file to launch the same PEDGEMON.EXE array monitor program that creates pop up alerts to Netfinity and sends alerts to the FFST Log as well as the OS/2 screen.
The onboard Intel Etherexpress PRO PCI Ethernet network function uses the same network driver as has been used with the Intel Etherexpress PRO100+ Server Adapter that was also tested in this unit previously. The driver files came from the Dell distributed 'Intel Pro/100+ LAN Adapter Configuration and Drivers Diskette SW Release 2.5'. Newer drivers from the Intel web site should work as well.
The RAID test in the OS/2 Certification test software does not recognize this controller so
the same method was used to test it that we have done since getting directions from IBM on
how they tested our original PERC controller on the Dell PE 2200 and PE 4200. We simply
simulate a drive failure during copy process and see if it rebuilds and reboots- but we also
check our OS/2 array manager to see if it detects the problem, see if the alarm goes off and
also if the monitor program notifies on-screen and sends alerts- and this all works great.
On this Dell PowerEdge 4400 several test xcopy and readrite.exe programs ran to generate
data transfers on the hard drives and then one of the drives in the RAID 10 array was pulled
out. This caused an alarm to sound on the PERC2/DC which we then silenced with the
OS/2 array manager software. That program also detected the degredation of the array and
the status of the drive showed 'failed'.
When we reinserted the drive, a rescan with the array manager program showed the status
had already changed to 'rebuild' and the rebuild changes were reflected also in the pedgemon
output via percentage numbers to the screen and array status change alerts were sent and
showed up in the Netfinity alert popup. When this completed the system was shutdown and
a reboot was done plus other wam and cold reboots. This was all done BEFORE the OS/2
Certification testing was started so the system completed all tests after an array rebuild
operation. This RAID failure/rebuild test procedure was used in both test phases-
Domain Controller and Additional Server.
