Installation Guide
To install SafeFire PPP you need to perform following steps:
- Create temporary directory.
- Unpack SafeFire PPP archive file into that directory.
- Run install.cmd and follow directions.
- If PPPoE (PPP over Ethernet) support is required then refer to
PPP over Ethernet Configuration Guide
for details of NDIS driver setup.
- Restart your computer if required.
- For command line version of software:
- Choose appropriate configuration file and alter it to accommodate
your settings (see "Up and running" book).
- Run SafeFire PPP using the following command:
sfppp -Cconfig_file_name
- For GUI version of software:
- Run software by double clicking on SafeFire PPP (GUI) icon.
- Click on Configure button.
- On the first page of settings select appropriate scenario.
For example, if it is planned to use dial-up connection over
ordinary phone line and share connection with other PC's in
the LAN you may choose one of the following scenarios:
- Dial-up client with CCP, NAT, DOD and a filter
- Dial-up client with CCP, NAT, DOD and 3 filters
- On Connection page of settings fill User ID and
Password entry fields.
For serial connection (ISDN, dial-up or leased line)
check and update if required Modem port and Port speed fields.
For all serial connection types except leased line connection Phone field is required too.
NOTE: Only port names COM1 thru COM8 are listed in Modem port
combo box. If other port is needed then just type port name there.
For example, if SafeFire PPP should use COM port shared on the
server SERVER1 as SERIAL1 on the other OS/2 PC in the LAN then
just type full name to the shared port resource:
\\SERVER1\SERIAL1
- If it is desired to allow GUI to save password in INI file - check Remember check box.
- For serial connections on Advanced page of settings dialog
Modem init string and Dial prefix entry fields may require adjustment.
- Sample dnshook.cmd script coming with SafeFire PPP package maintain DNS
information provided by ISP and received during PPP connection setup.
It is recommended to update script settings by clicking on
REXX -> Configure push button.
If local DNS server is installed or it is not desired to
to allow SafeFire PPP to maintain DNS information then
just clear REXX Script field.
- Click on Ok push button.
- After closing of Settings dialog, Configure push button will change
its name to Connect. Click on it and SafeFire PPP will start establishing of connection.
Installation of the registration information (License key) can be done in following ways
(for registered users only, refer to License and Ordering documents for other details):
- SafeFire PPP GUI has special page for license key.
- Received registration information can be placed in file named sfppp.key.
Then file should be placed in the directory where other CFG files resides.
- Registration information can be placed directly in any choosen configuration file.
Note 1: If you plan to use your own configuration file which does not includes
standard default.cfg file, please, provide a way to pass registration information
to software. From the SafeFire PPP standpoint registration information
file is an usual configuration file with usual configuration variables in it.
Note 2: Even if registration information is provided in some cases
you may see in logged messages warning about unability to include "sfppp.key"
configuration file. You may safely ignore this message.
