Software

Network Time Protocol (NTP) Client for OS/2 Version 1.07

Description

The Network Time Protocol (NTP) Client connects to a time server through the Internet, gets the current time and adjusts the clock of your OS/2 machine using the system DATE function.

What you need

You need Warp V3 or Warp V4 with TCP/IP or the IBM Internet Access Kit (IAK) installed to run this software.
IMPORTANT: This package needs a DLL named RXSOCK.DLL. If you have Warp V3 WITHOUT TCP/IP installed (Internet Access Kit only), you must get the DLL mentioned above this site or hobbes and copy it to your /tcpip/dll directory.

Where to find a time server

There are many public time servers available in the Internet. The following Webpage contains an excellent list of time servers open to the public: http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~mills/ntp/servers.html.

Important: Be sure to use a time server located near yourself to ensure that

Where can I install this NTP client

You can install this NTP client on any OS/2 system with Warp V3 or Warp V4 which has access to the Internet. If you are behind a SOCKS firewall, you can enable the general SOCKS gateway of Warp 4 since this NTP client doesn't offer the usage of a SOCKS gateway. Many users install this NTP client on an OS/2 system running a LAN-Server. All those clients (LAN-Requesters) adjust their time using the following LAN-Requester command: NET TIME \\SERVER01 /SET /YES where 'SERVER01' is the name of your LAN-Server. If the TIMESOURCE service is activated on your LAN- Server, your OS/2 client will adjust its time automatically.
Another fine way is to add the NTP client as an autostart job to your Internet Dialer (if you don't have a leased line). This automatically adjust your time when accessing the Internet.

Redistribute the received time within your local network

Your OS/2 LAN Requesters will automatically adjust their time if TIMESOURCE service is active on your OS/2 LAN-Server. However, if you don't use a LAN Server/Requester architecture inside your network, you may want to redistribute the correct time using TCP/IP and the Network Time Protocol (NTP). All you need is a NTP Server server software on a system which gets its own time from a precise server on the Internet using the NTP client.
