I think I dl'd it from a M$ website a while back. It's a self-extracting file of 1.8Mb, which then requires a setup in WIN/OS2. They use OS/2 enough that they are growing up expecting a fast, reliable, easy to use operating system on their PCs. > The doom and gloom's a bit depressing, the userbase and mainstream > applications seem to be slipping but the community is strong. I remember a few years back when I could easily keep up with OS/2 developments, and would install and try out every new or updated program. Now there is no way I can keep up with the ongoing development and have had to change to just trying out programs that I really need. I switched from Netscape's email component recently and it took a lot of time to try out all the alternatives... PMMail/2, MR/2 ICE?, PolarBar, RexxMail, Pine/2, and one or two others. Sometimes having a choice is hard work. I have been trying out the eCS preview, and have now ordered an additional licence for eCS Pro for a dual CPU board I bought. A few tweaks here and there and it looks just like OS/2 again. I will probably go the eCS update plan and see how eCS turns out. At least the eCS guys are trying to sell the OS/2 product instead of trying to ignore it to death like the head part of IBM. If it turns out that I don't like the way eCS goes then I can always switch back to the plain IBM convenience pack for OS/2. If OS/2 was ever dropped by IBM then that would only mean less updates I have to apply to my systems, and more time to actually use them!! :-) It would still run fine on my PCs, and would still be better the the alternatives. I have no problems using this service with NS4.61/java118, and their option to show 'the most recent transactions today' is handy. The only funny I have ever noticed is a 'transfer interrupted' message during logon which doesn't seem to matter. Minor complaints are the transaction window always is sized to the maximum, which is not needed on large resolution desktops, and in an evening in Perth the account balance, etc, facilities are not always available. This is probably due to late night batch mainframe runs in Sydney or Melbourne, but I laugh whenever a website from a large company can't run 24*7... It's a sad effort and detracts from the online service. > Commonwealth Bank: > Even mentions OS/2, however, untested. Yep. I have no problems here either. They have also recently introduced some new features like 'pay anyone', etc, like ANZ already had. Their transaction window is sized nicely as required. They don't have the 'most recent transactions today' feature of ANZ. I think they also have to same problem with the facilities like account balances, etc, not always being available at night, but I could be mistaken due to false memories... The reason is that not so many years ago I was working for one of the large Australian banks in mainframe computer security. The people who administered the voice phone banking system realised they had a problem with occasional failed authorisation for their phone banking staff ( who were operating on behalf of the real customers at the other end of the phone ). This turned out to be the result of sloppy communications programming ( their server wasn't precisely tracking mainframe 'signon' requests and responses associated with a particular phone banking 'transaction' sequence, so sometimes an action was attempted before the server was currently 'signed on' and authorised to do anything ). The response from the part of the bank responsible for the phone banking 'system' was - NOT to attend any meetings on the problem - to delegate ALL responsibility to their contracted programmers - to state that no money could be spent on the current phone banking system ( it was scheculed to be replaced 'shortly' ) - to support the programmers' 'idea' that the 'best' soluton was to remov= e ALL security from requests from the phone banking server to the mainframe, which would of course mean that signon requests from the server were always successful ( so this was the practice which was implemented, after, of course, the security people had the request in writing, with signatures from the requesting managers Of course, not just signon requests, but any requested activity from the server, or what looked like the server, would always be successful ). You make your own choices with internet banking. BUT - these are the same sort of people, if not the exact same ones, who were then 'designing', and later implemented diallup phone banking and then internet banking - note that the only practice for financial authorisation which I've seen in large financial institutions is to keep identification information for people in financial system databases, NOT in system security databases ( so anyone who can look directly at the files which make up them could look at your identification details for financial activity ) - personally, since then I've had my credit union remove the voice phone banking password from my account ( funny how many institiutions still support voice phone banking ), and= - I keep PHYSICAL evidence of all banking transactions, with a branch stamp on deposit stubs = ----------- previously emailed ----------------- > G'day from the coat-hanger city. > Keep in mind most Bank Internet Apps won't work with Java 1.3, they onl= y > work with Java 1.1.8 > So if, (like me) you rely on Internet Banking, be warned. > Adelaide Bank, which provides excellent fee-free services, has no > offices in Sydney :( > BTW, Internet Banking from the following Banks has been tested with NS > 4.61 for OS/2: > Adelaide Bank: > Full Java app, excellent reliability, excellent functionality. My suspiction is you do have already an ample collection of Dos games and educational programs. But what about people having to begin fron scratch on?
