The network cable then just plugs into the modem and you set your gateway (default route) to ip of the modem and put in your nameservers. We turned dhcp off and manually configured so I knew what was going on. Be sure to firewall. To run our internal lan through the adsl modem I stuck a dual nic linux box between the lan and modem to firewall web serve and masquerade the internal network as a single internet IP. Prior to the linux box I was using Internet Gate, a masquerading gateway on os2 dialup but the linux solution is free, easy to administer and stands in the corner and does its thing like a brick. steve On Thu, 31 May 2001 11:34:39 +1100 (EDT), Dr Graham Norton FRACP Neurologist wrote: >Well guys ADSL has arrived in Adelaide!! Gee and here I was thinking my primary school teachers must have been wrong when they said Adelaide was the capital of South Australia! :-) Here in Mackay, were I live isn't even on Telstra's 'big spreadsheet' (the Telstra guys words) for rollout in the next 6 months. It appears that the exchange which services our suburb has missed out on the digital upgrades required for ADSL. The newer exchanges in Mackay should have it by next month though. Get Internode's offering: http://adsl.internode.on dot net Telstra's Bigpond ADSL uses PPPoE which is a PITA. Whilst my link is pretty reliable now, there is a problem with LAN Server with PPPoE on the same box that still needs to be resolved. I'm really getting a bit sick of having to fix problems with PPPoE, when straight ethernet would solve all my problems. Using Internode's offering you'll just need: 1) InJoy Firewall Professional 2) Alcatel SpeedTouch Home ADSL to Ethernet modem or D-Link DSL-300 ADSL to Ethernet Modem Internode is run by Smart People who are into Standards compliance, (OK, they hate Windows...). I can configure there setup faster than you can say Linux... Yes it would be faster! Dr Graham Norton FRACP Neurologist wrote: > > Well guys ADSL has arrived in Adelaide!! Injoy Firewall will allow you to set up a Virtual Private Network if you run it at home and at the office. I think that Injoy Dialer and 1 x ADSL node would work too. Note that as your practise in in Modbury, cable is available in some parts of that area too (I'm at Greenwith). Cable is a lower cost/month than ADSL for the same speed. Depending where you live, cable may be a better option for home. ADSL is probably the only option in the office as I'm not sure if they'd install cable in an office suite. You can check if cable is available at www.bigpond dot com/broadband/ Regards, Paul. I've seen both working (Daryl has ADSL, I have Telstra cable) and we both agree who's got the better deal. Apparently if you can get OPTUS cable rather than FOXTEL it gives even better performance (although you have to look out for their "acceptable use policy"). There's been several comparisons recently in the press, in fact there's a pretty good one in this month's Atomic "maximum power computing" mag (ISSN # 1444-8998 if you can't find it in the newsagents). I think you said in an off-list email to me that you already have ADSL, in which case this discussion is a moot point. Cheers/2 Ed.
