I've got it going on Win95 but can't seem to get it going on OS/2. I seem to have the driver installed but can't print. I've deleted the printer object a couple of times and reinstalled the driver which is in J:\Epson Driver. After defining the path, clicking refresh, selecting the driver and clicking install a sys3175 error occurs. However if I click OK to end program/command/operation, install goes ahead and the dialog box says that the printer driver was successfully installed and a printer object is formed in the create a printer window. I can then select it and click create and it seems to be installed. However nothing seems to be getting through to the printer when I try to print. Checking the properties window shows the printer to be installed and the output port as LPT1. Any ideas how I can get this printer working? I had no problems whatsoever installing the driver and it can do everything under OS/2 that it can under Win 98. Simply a wonderful printer with a well written driver. I suspect you may have a corrupted driver. You should have epson omni driver V4 - I'll email this direct to you, off-list. The other things you might like to check is that your parallel port (I presuming you're running on the parralel port, not on USB) is set to bi-directional. You probably should also set the /IRQ switch on print01.sys to give you better performance (make sure nothing else is using IRQ 7 before you do this though). The driver works with or without this switch set. By the way, what method are you using to install the driver ?? Are you simply opening drives and going to the driver file, clicking it and drag and drop installing or are you going into an existing printer object and doing an add driver ?? Both should work but I think I used the second option. Something else to check, make sure the printer object doesn't have both your old Deskjet and new epson drivers assigned to it - it should only have the epson, but I seen this happen before with wierd consequences. OK, I'll now send you the driver file I used. Cheers/2 Ed Durrant. Printer drivers have extended attributes. If you transfer the files on anything but an OS/2 box, these attributes will not be preserved. The last time I looked, they come off the Internet as a *.exe file. The trick is download the file from the Internet directly to the OS/2 box & expand them there & then. You can push the *.exe file around, but not the individual contents of it, for the above reasons. When I was working at IBM, Desktop support got caught on this one, (!). To set printer to bi-directional - it's a hardware setting. When you turn your PC on, there should be a message like Press Del for setup - depending upon the make it may also say Press F1 for setup mode. Either way, press the required key in time and you will be taken into what looks like a simple DOS menu program. If you search through the menu you ned to find the printer settings, depending upon the make of the BIOS, thius may be under a heading such as peripherals or possibly I/O cards or ports. In any case, once you find the printer setting there will be vrious options - ECP, EPP, Normal, etc. - You need one that also displays bi-directional. It may also say that it is going to use IRQ 7 and possibly a DMA as well, depending which option you select. I tend to go for ECP and Bi-directionl (which may be stated as extended rather than bi-directional). While you're here check that the printer IO address is set to 378 and if identified as such, says LPT1. Now that's all set, eascape back to the menu and exit saving data. If you acidently change ANYTHING else, exit without changing and start again. 2. Setting the IRQ option. Go to a command prompt and run the editor on the config.sys file : C:> E CONFIG.SYS Use find (ctrl+F) to search for device=print01.sys and then simply add /IRQ at the end of this line. Press F3, save, exit shutdown and restart the PC. Now, even if these two options are not set, you should still be able to print so what's going wrong ? Go to connections, printers and right click on ny printer object. select properties and go to the printer driver page. right click on a printer driver object and select install>new device. Type in the directory where the epsonomni4 driver was expanded and then select the stylus color 680 from the list displayed and click install. A message should be displayed saying that the selected driver was successfully installed. The Driver is now installed. Now open up the templates folder and drag and drop the printer template into the printers folder (note the printer template is not in the printers folder all ready that's the network printer template that we can't use for locally attached printers. After you "drop" this template, you will have a panel displayed showing the installed printer drivers on the left - select the Epson 680 and on the right select LPT1 (note - by default the printer installer will select the next non-used port - often LPT2 which you don't have in your PC). Change the name from simply printer to whatever you want to call the printer - such as Epson 680, press the create button and the panel will close and the printer will be installed. Hope this works ! At least using this method of first installing the driver and then creating the printer, we amy be able to see better where any problems lie, should they still occur. Regards, Ed Durrant.
