For no apparent reason, both error lights on the printer have started flashing and (of course) it can't print now. I've all the usual resetting tactics all to no avail. So it starts to look like the Epson 680 range may have a basic design flaw. I Harvey Normans are open today, I'll be taking it back for a replacement. I'm posting this message here in case someone else is considering buying this model of printer as when it works, it works well under os/2. Although the printer manual doesn't indicate that this combination of flashing lights mean it - the printer had simply run out of black ink ! I downloaded the latest epson monitoring utility (only for Windoze unfortunately) - ran it and it told me the sorry truth - no black ink ! This printer seems to use ink faster than my previous HP Deskjet, I'll have to check that it defaults to draft print mode in the future. Unfortunately the printer can't just run on the colour cartridge, so it's off to the shops to see what a replacement is going to cost me ! So - apart from this little "hic-cup" I can continue to recommend the Epson Stylus Color 680 under OS/2. Cheers/2 Ed. The problem is every time you start or refresh the desktop all objects on the desktop are red - and that will now include any tracks that you want to write as these could get up to a total of 650 or 700 MB, your desktop is going to load AWEFULLY slow and can get corrupted. You should drag and drop the "create Audio CD" folder onto a drive in the drives folder, in this way it will store the tracks on a normal drive, not in the desktop. I'm not saying that this is what is topping the process from working, but iy could be, so I'd do this first. Cheers/2 Ed. I've got it working on OS/2 and Win95. In OS/2 it prints from all applications except there's a problem in Lotus Smartsuite 123. As I mentioned before if I try to print a range of cells which have formatting as well as text and numbers it will print only the formatting e.g. background colours and borders. After a lot of experimenting I found that if I then click print a second time it will print everything the second time. At least I've found that I can print what I want but I am wasting a sheet of paper and time as well. I can't see any setting that prevents this. I think most of my problems were due to not setting the printer to Text/Graphics and leaving it on Photo which seems to be the default. No contact with the printer occurs if I leave it on Photo. I'll have to see if there is if I try to print a bitmap. I thought I had changed it to text but it seems to go back to Photo after going out of an application. I was told by a chap at the computer shop that the inkwells on Epson printers are smaller than those on HP's hence the cheaper price but need to change them more frequently. By the way there's no problem printing a range of cells with formatting in StarOffice. I think I would have preferred a HP printer but there's nothing in their range that's in the market that has OS/2 drivers. The Canon BJC3000 is the only other Printer selling now that has drivers for OS/2 but it has separate inkwells for all three colours. I'll come along to the InstallFest and observe and collect my copy but there seems to be too many bugs and problems with this release and I was very disappointed to read Kim Cheungs suggestion that we could migrate to Windows instead as IBM were not very cooperative and Lotus wasn't developing Smartsuite for OS/2 any further and that it ran better under Windows anyhow. I think i'll just stick with my present setup which is stable and has all that I need. The problem that's going to get us all eventually is hardware compatibility. Eventually we're going to need new hard drives, printers, scanners etc and if they continue to be developed for Windows only and IBM loses interest in providing drivers we will be forced to migrate to Windows or Linux. I put Linux on a spare machine with a 133CPU but wasn't too impressed. It was rather slow loading and the applications were also slow loading. Maybe it works better on a machine with higher higher CPU but when I had OS/2 on this computer it seemed to work much faster as does WIN95. Why should we have to buy these 1G + CPUs when we can't type any faster anyway. I have no desire to play the stupid games that are available. As I couldn't get a replacement cartridge easily, I decided to try a Calidad refill (which i had a lot of success with on my HP Printers) - unfortunately although I managed to refill the cartridge, the printer then refused to accept it, saying it was the wrong model. I tried various things but at the end of the day I had to go and buy a "real" Epson cartridge, what do you mean Epson are Cheaper ? This one cost $54.96 - my HP Black cartridges were around the $49 mark I think, but since I always used to refill them, they just cost me $9.90 each time I needed a new one. You said HP don't have OS/2 drivers ?? True but OS/2 has IBM supported drivers for HP printers - in the same way that the Epson driver is an IBM written one. Perhaps the hi-res printers don't have drivers yet ? My DJ640C runs fine under OS/2. On the Smartsuite printing issues - which version of smartsuite are you using - 1.6 ?? Some earlier versions (1.0 and 1.1) had printing problems with some printers. Cheers/2 Ed. Alan Duval wrote: > > Hi everyone, > > I got my replacement Epson Stylus Color 680 on Saturday. It seems to me that the demo at the southern calif groups metting was what you'd expect from a beta version of a product, not the release code ! Still perhaps v 1.1 will be better - after all Microsoft at version 2000 and still haven't got it right ! I prefer to use Star Office rather than Lotus Smartsuite, it has less compatibility problems and I simply prefer it's appearance. As for hardware support and applications under OS/2, I was just thinking that this is actually getting BETTER not worse. I now have a Canon Scanner scanning, an Epson printing at photographic quality and my Ricoh CD-R burning CDs faster than I ever though would be possible. On Multimedia, the warpMedia product is bringing DVD's Divx support along with MPEG nd various formats to OS/2. The guys in Russia are turning out new utilities and applications like there's no tommorrow. So all in all I think we've probably got more hardware supported and applictions available than ever before on OS/2. A lot of this is through internet bsed consolidtion of efforts of programmers and "porters" (no I don't mean the suitcase carrying kind). Since software can be ported from Linux to OS/2 (examples - CDRecord and SANE) this continues to open up even more possibilities of development for OS/2 "real believers" . Dead Operating System ?? I don't think so !! Cheers/2 Ed. P.S. Linux believers are very proud of the fact that "their" OS doesn't need powerful hardware - so it was interesting to haer your comments. I think the 640C is available but the model I saw uses just one cartridge with the colours and black has to be made by combining the colours so it slows the printer down. OS/2 *can't* do everything:- try doing Video editing on it, but it does 95% of everything I need, so I can use other systems, to do the last 5%. I would seriously challenge anyone claiming that my productivity would increase by changing to an all Windoze environment, just so I can supposedly run all my applications on one integrated platform. My experience has been that Windoze is such a slug & has so many security holes, even though I wouldn't have to email my brother for the occasional file conversion, I'd be worse-off in the long run. Also, the cost in hardware & software upgrading just wouldn't warrant the change:- I own & continue to use everyday a 133MHz laptop, 133MHz desktop & 100MHz server. They work, I owe nothing on them, & they continue to make me money. I've never had down-time due to viruses, nor use a Virus-scanner anymore, nor waste time with them. Do allow me to remind to the standard procedure: Download the latest omni.exe file and unpack it in a temporary directory. Then, open the file omni.lst and look what printers are listed there. Probably the 950 C too. (if the latter can print to Dos, it's OK for OS/2) Anyway, as it stands now the HP 970 C(xi) is by far the best deal in respect to price/quality. But don't forget to install the latest print01.sys: 24-05-01 0:39 42.976 0 a--- PRINT01.EXE as the latter supports PCI parallel port cards and has a new switch BASEDEV=print01.sys /MPL /MPL Directs the driver to use modified polling for printing. Hi Ed, Always pays to check basic stuff! Try refilling your cartridge, if possible. Usually fiddly, sometimes messy, but a lot cheaper and unless you are going to have spare cartridges hanging around for the time when they most often run out (read - when the shops are shut), a lot more convenient. Refilling doesn't suit some people - usually those that are all thumbs ;-) Cheers, Leigh Bunting Colonel Light Gardens South Australia Find out more about Col. Whether the 930C would work with the 970C driver depends on it's ability to print to Dos.
