The Bay Area User Group meeting went considerably over time, and so I just got home. After reassembling the computer, I'm typing at you all. First, let me point out that we had the largest turnout for a BAUG meeting since 1998. Glenn Hudson did an excellent job of presenting eComStation. He kept us on the edge of our chairs for nearly three hours. From the descriptions of the SCSI boot options on the CSM or preboot screen, to the new program to make floppies, the group saw the amazing work that has gone into the new installer. There were dozens of comments about the streamlining of the new installation process. The whole topic of discussion has now gone from "how do I install eCS" to "How can my wife, or kids install eCS?" The new installer may not quite make breakfast for you in the morning, but it is worlds ahead of the old process. Glenn kept talking about the Killer App. The OS/2 installer was the app that killed OS/2. Now Serenity has killed the OS/2 installer. (OK, some network parts remain). One regret that I have is that Glenn is not a salesman. He should have taken orders right there in the room, I'm sure he could have gotten quite a few. That's OK, though, because I'll bet those people will buy it soon anyway. We had to leave before we were really ready; the meeting could have easily gone for several hours more. The eCS Guides (do I have the name right?) were particularly well received. They present all of the applications that come with eCS as one product. This part came near the end of the meeting, and this is where the energy of the meeting really peaked. If Glenn had installed every one of the apps, I am sure the audience would have stayed to the last progress bar. We all use OS/2 in order to run apps. Glenn also showed how to use Wise Machine, which is something I have wanted to see since I receive Preview 1 last fall. I'm sure I've missed some important stuff, and I hope that others will fill what I have overlooked. Several attendees were no longer running OS/2, but were planning to return, now that configuring the machine wasn't such a big deal. Thanks to all at Serenity Systems for your good work. HOWEVER, There is a lot of discussion about the enforceability of "shrinkwrap clauses" generally i.e "by opening this package, breathing or blinking you agree to sell your soul to me". > -----Original Message----- > From: Ed Durrant [SMTP:edurrantatbigpond dot net dot au] > Sent: Wednesday, 13 June 2001 20:54 > To: os2genauatos2 dot org dot au > Subject: Re: [os2genau] eComStation - Hosting other OS's > > I suppose the next legal question would be if the conditions of sale of > a product from Microsoft (or any other manufacturer in that case) are > flawed in the eyes of the law, does that make the whole agreement > defunct ?? > > Cheers/2 > Ed. > > Ian Manners wrote: > > I believe that parts of the Microsoft license are NOT enforcable > > in Australia, as local laws overrule select parts anyway. 3================================================ Date: Thu, 14 Jun 2001 11:03:17 From: Voytek Eymont Subject: Re: [os2genau] Fwd: [eCS] Not really eCS related, but very interesting... ** Reply to note from "John Angelico" Fri, 01 Jun 2001 13:09:10 +0900 (EST) > Steve Gibson is doing us a HUGE favour here. you mean, OS/2 users ? I'm sure it's purely unintentional, sadly, Steve Gibson was always >vehemently ANTI OS/2 in his editorials. That's water under the bridge now, Voytek. He wasn't alone, and he could have been as wrong as a lot of people. But his attitude might have been no more of a problem than say Edwin Black of OS/2 Prefessional mag... it cuts both ways. He has signalled a fundamental security flaw in Win systems which, so far, MS has declined to fix. Surely that is a bonus for any non-MS OS in Internet-land. He has a swipe at Unix because it already has what Win2K & Win-XP are soon to provide, but the risk is in Win-land because of a) the default no-security model of Win systems and b) the laziness (? maybe apathy, inertia to be kind) of Win-operators who don't do anything about security because they assume that if they are safe that's all there is to security. >but SpinRite was a nice app, fwiw, Yep. And ShieldsUp and PortProbe are just as good in the Internet-world. I test every so often to make sure I am not a risk to myself or others while online.
