From: "Brad Van Eps/NCO/CEtv" Date: Thu, 4 Oct 2001 09:05:24 +1000 Hi, I also run OptusatHome under OS/2 and am wrapped with how well it works. The biggest issues are: 1. If you are running TCP/IP stack 4.0 (the one which comes default with OS/2 Warp 4), make sure you upgrade it to 4.02W (from memory). User "inetver" to check this. DHCP is somewhat broken in the base release, so check ftp://service.boulder.ibm dot com/ps/products/tcpip/fixes/v4.0os2/latest/stack/ for the latest patches to fix this. 2. As you have done, change the dhpcd.cfg file with your customer ID. 3. Also change the name of your machine to your customer ID, eg. coxxxxxxx-A to make sure you are always issued the same IP address. This will play havoc with their ARP tables if you don't. This has worked fine for me under both FP11 and FP15 of the OS. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Brad van Eps, B.Eng Senior DBA Database Administration group Austar Communications Gold Coast, QLD Ph: (075) 557 5630 Fax: (075) 574 1417 E-mail: bradvanepsataustar dot com dot au OS/2 Zealot! %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% "Stephen Anderson" To: Subject: [os2genau] A newbie's simple guide for connecting OatH to OS/2? 10/03/2001 08:38 PM Please respond to os2genau Does such a guide exist? Last night I installed OS/2 version 4 (the version that was given away for free last year on the APC magazine disk) and I immediately updated the OS by installing OS/2 Fixpack 5 which appeared on an APC magazine disc from April 1998. I then added the following line to my \mptn\etc\dhcpcd.cfg file: Option 12 "COnnnnnnn-A" # Host Name (cable customer ID) (all the other options in this file were rem'ed by default) However at boot up, the computer initialises the AOpen Ethernet adaptor, and then waits for about 60 seconds while it attempts to make a connection to the DHCP server at OatH. After this time I get a message telling me it was unable to get the required information and that it would continue to try in the background. What am I doing wrong here. Does anyone else who reads this mail list have an OS/2 box running with OatH. Is there some other fixpack that I need to install in addition to Fixpack 5? Any help will be greatly appreciated. [I had been using FreeAgent under ODIN in eCS to download (at < 28.8K )the complete news.ecomstation.nl site(68MB)to a HDD so that I could peruse at leisure, only to find out that I had missed a setting and although the .DAT/.IDX files didn't shrink, the database purged everything older than 30days automatically - as I hadn't marked every message with "KEEP"], and have only just finished reloading it all. I'm sorry I gave you a misimpression about OS/2 ALREADY running on my VAIO. I purchased my PCG-F190 in early 1999 in USA, before Sony started marketing locally. It comprises PII-366/128MB/2.5MB NeoMagic video/14.1" XGA Active Matrix TFT/6.4GB HDD [SONY sensibly partitioned to C:(OS-W98-4.2GB FAT32)+D:(AV data 2GB FAT32)+ 200MB hibernation]/built-in DVD-ROM & 1.44 Floppy/i.LINK(200mbps Firewire/Ricoh Cardbus(2xtype II slots or 1xType II), all in about 3.1KG. Ultimately I hope to put eCS on it, but not until I have everything extra (system software upgrades etc.) which updates the System Recovery and Application CDs written off to CD-RW/R. The Video section of the AV NeoMagic chips I know is supported by Scitech drivers, but so far I haven't been able to discover anything about the Audio side in OS/2. I know from the performance in W98 that it would FLY under OS/2 MCP or eCS. I am about to do a search on "OS/2 & Firewire" to see if that would be a possibility with a bootable Firewire drive under OS/2 or alternatively whether I can replace the internal HDD (it's an IBM!) with a larger one, that I can setup with Partition Magic and install System Commander, which will run from the FAT32. Apart from the usual Windows GPFs, the main problem in W98, is the icon-problem - you can't lock them in place in WIN and ditto with the Windows Explorer telling me that I can't MOVE some folder or another in the directory pane to wherever, when I had no intention of picking the damn thing up anyhow. I won't be installing eCS on it until I've sorted a few "features" out on the desktop. regards, - Mike 6============================================== Date: Thu, 04 Oct 2001 06:15:30 +1000 From: "Mike" <> Subject: Re: [os2genau] W2K switch off Date: Tue, 25 Sep 2001 05:56:30 +1000 Ed Durrant wrote: >This function is related to APM - I hadn't realised that this HAS been >implemented undfer Warp successfully as well ! On my desktop machine, I have the ATX soft-power-button configured to "instant-off" mode as opposed to the other option which is to "put the machine into suspend mode" if button pressed for less than 4 seconds. In either case pressing the power button for more than 4 seconds completely shut the power OFF. I have an option in the BIOS to have the LEDs flash while in suspend mode, which I have enabled. Are you sure that you are actually switching the power OFF? - Mike 7============================================== From: "David Forrester" Date: Thu, 04 Oct 2001 12:34:12 +1000 (EST) Subject: Re: [os2genau] [os2genau_digest]OS/2 on VAIO On Thu, 04 Oct 2001 05:52:18 +1000, List Admin wrote: >Sorry Gavin for the delay in responding. > [I had been using FreeAgent under ODIN in eCS to download >(at < 28.8K )the complete news.ecomstation.nl site(68MB)to a >HDD so that I could peruse at leisure, only to find out that >I had missed a setting and although the .DAT/.IDX files >didn't shrink, the database purged everything older than >30days automatically - as I hadn't marked every message with >"KEEP"], and have only just finished reloading it all. > >I'm sorry I gave you a misimpression about OS/2 ALREADY >running on my VAIO. Is it using the NeoMagic audio (something like MagicMedia 256ZX) or a Crystal Audio? If it's NeoMagic audio, you're out of luck. I have a Dell Latitude with this video/sound combination, and unfortunately, there's no sound support. At the moment I'm trying to find the time (and courage) to port the Linux drivers (with help from the ported SBLive drivers). -- David Forrester davidforatterrigal dot net dot au http://www.os2world dot com/djfos2/ 8============================================== Date: Thu, 04 Oct 2001 16:26:33 +1000 From: Peter Godbold Subject: [os2genau] NS 4.61 Browser Access Problem Anyone else getting an "Access Denied" problem with the Australian IT Ping Newsletters? It seems that in the last three weeks the PING Newsletters have been accessing a web page: http://hjc1.careerone dot com dot au/js/setLocation.js which continually resturns an "ERROR - The requested URL could not be retrieved", with an "Access denied" return code. Just wondering if it might be checking the browser version and rejecting the NS 4.61 identifier. I seem to remember there was an entry you could insert in prefs.js to cause it to masquerade as V6, but can't locate the info at the moment. Peter G.
