Best bang/$ ? Short answer Bob, there are no gaurentees - especially if you are building it yourself. No reflection on your personal skills, but the biggest problem I have found is getting components to work together reliably ! I guess, the best guide is keep it as industry standard as possible. Like it or not, that means an Intel CPU and motherboard, not an AMD or Clone one. Soundblaster sound card (not onboard and none of these fancy sound cards). Supported by SciTech Display doctor, Video card - perhaps an S3 model ? For HD - I'd actually go for the 7200 RPM drives rather than the old and now obsolete 5400 RPM ones. Pick a good name IBM, Fujitsu etc. and you should be OK. I'd avoid the 10,000 and 15.000 RPM drives at the moment. Network card (if you are using your system on a LAN) from one of the larger names, who supply OS/2 drivers still. Then again, you could get lucky, go out and buy the cheapest of everything, put it together and it all works, but I suspect that's not so likely. If like me, you like fixing problems and don't care that by the time you've got the PC working, it'd be cheaper to buy a ready built machine (they're still getting cheaper month by month), then go the second route but be prepared to throw some of the hardware out along the way. Be VERY careful to remove any traces of previous versions though (I've had problems with this) Best is to install to a system that hasn't had the earlier version on at all. Cheers/2 Ed. Best bang/$ ? G'day Bob, Most boards will support OS/2, even if they don't say so in the manual, but DO check the manuals and get one that does. It's the best way to make sure. Point in case: the last board I bought was an old Gygabyte GA2000+ with the Intel 440 BX chipset. Worked very well with OS/2 (not so well with Windows) It's been replace with an older Aopen board with Intel 440 BX chipset as well. I have had no problems with the Intel chips, and haven't had to install board drivers. My OS's are Win98, OS/2 v4 fp9, Linux RH 6.2. With graphics, you can practically grab any card you like, thanks to Scitech Display Doctor, BUT.... and it's a big but..... SDD and Colorworks do NOT get along. If you are using Colorworks (like me) then you need a card with native OS/2 drivers. I'm looking at a Nvidia TNT2 AGP 32meg for my machine as the 3dfx I have needs SDD. So I'm back to my P75 for my 2D graphics creatitions. I can't give advice about AMD or VIA boards; I've never used them, but I hope this helps just a little bit. :-) Gavin On Mon, 08 Oct 2001 16:22:00 +0800, Bob wrote: >Well it looks like I'm in for a new OS/2 box :(. I've been using a matrox g200/8Mb with good effect with their native drivers so I haven't had anything to do with the sdd drivers (especially since they say they have a problem with kensington mice... which I use). I would recycle the graphics card except that I suspect that it too is part of the problem ( I have been getting a lot of lockups in the WPS recently that seem to be purely a graphics problem) > I can't give advice about AMD or VIA boards; I've never used them, but I hope this > helps just a little bit. :-) > > Gavin Thanks for the reply :). No no! not cheapest! :). Best bang/$ ! I'm not after a bleeding edge machine so the stuff at the best price point is what I'm after. > If like me, you like fixing problems and don't care that by the time you've > got the PC working, it'd be cheaper to buy a ready built machine (they're > still getting cheaper month by month), then go the second route but be > prepared to throw some of the hardware out along the way. I have put together a fair few boxes in days gone by... just nothing recently. So I'm confident that I can do the job (hey, I've even got an anti-stat workstation. That's often a lot more than the fly by night clone box builders have :). > Cheers/2 > > Ed. cheers^2 :) 11============================================== Date: Tue, 09 Oct 2001 11:32:43 +0200 From: Kris Steenhaut Subject: Re: [os2genau] Need new OS/2 machine.
