I'd release it to everyone else :) Windoze->OS/2 isn't that hard, there are a lot of similarities, just like most cars have a steering wheel, 4 wheels, accelerator etc. The functions are the same, they just look & feel a little different. Getting her comfortable with her new car means using comparisons to her old car, like: a) OS/2 has a GUI, like Windows, its called the WPS... b) You can close folders with the box with the cross in it, just like Windows, its in a different place, but it does the same thing, just like the windscreen wipers on your old car. I suspect she is using some Windoze keystrokes that are inadvertently moving/deleting things. Most icons can be locked in place, not sure about the WarpCenter though. She probably *is* typing too fast, especially switching between apps, there is some sluggishness in the WPS to keyboard commands, meaning if things are typed too fast, unpredictable results may occur. My OS/2 runs flawlessly for the most part, except when my "Macintosh mate" comes around for a visit. Now this guy is a Computer Science PhD student at the uni where my wife lectures, and is fairly conversant with a couple of platforms - Macintosh, Windoze, Solaris, Linux and AIX. Mine is the only OS/2 he ever sees. I have tried to demo OS/2 for him several times, but it seems he has some kind of "proximity fuse", and is known for it at the uni also. This guy only has to come within about 2 meters of a non-Mac machine and he will crash it terminally!! His talent is so reliable that I, amongst many, won't even let him in the same room as my machines. I mean that literally!! Every time he comes into my office (he doesn't touch ANYTHING except for the floor and perhaps a seat) I end up re-installing OS/2. BTW, he's not religious or into any "black arts" or anything else para-normal. The other one is my 2nd daughter - 16yrs old. She likes to cruise the internet from time to time, and usually just uses what ever machine is logged on at the time. If that's mine (eCS) she'll crash it about 90% of the time. Everything will end up locked and usually a hard reboot is required. It takes her about 10 minutes to get to this stage, and she has a vested interest in keeping it running because I usually won't let he log back on. I've sat and watched many times and I can't see ANYTHING that she's doing wrong. If I let her reboot my machine into Windoze, or if she uses my wife's machine (Windoze) she can surf happily for hours and the machine is fine at the end. We have NS4.61 in eCS and NS4.73 in Win98. These things have happened so reliably for 4+ years, that we just work around them now, coz no-one can work out why. BTW, none of my other 4 children, my wife nor any of my other friends have had these problems with OS/2. In fact my son uses OS/2 on his machine because he hates Windoze unreliability. I know it doesn't help, but it comforts ;-) Cheers Kev Downes ========================= Kev Downes Windows is not the answer. Windows is the question. The answer is NO! We use and recommend IBM OS/2 Warp and Serenity System's eComStation. ========================= "Jesus Christ is the centre of everything and the object of everything; and he who does not know him, knows nothing of the order of the world and nothing of himself." Its a bit difficult to explain, you have to sit and watch her in action. You could try altering the mouse tracking speed and double click sensitivity on her machine and see if it helps. The only way you are going to figure it out for certain is to sit and watch her use the machine. This can be a paradox though as many people's actions are altered when they are being watched. For all of us who feel only the deepest love and affection for the way computers have enhanced our lives: At a recent computer exposition (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated: "If General Motors had kept up with the technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25.00 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon." In response to Bill's comments, GM issued a press release stating: "If General Motors had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics: 1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash twice a day. 2. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car. 3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You would have to pull over to the side of the road, close all of the windows, shut off the car, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could continue. For some reason, you would simply accept this. 4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine. 5. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive -- but would run on only five percent of the roads. 6. The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning lights would all be replaced by a single "General Protection Fault" warning light. 7. The airbag system would ask "Are you sure?" before deploying. 8. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna. 9. Every time GM introduced a new car, car buyers would have to learn to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car. 10. You'd have to press the "Start" button to turn the engine off. -----Original Message----- From: brianbatkdfisher dot com dot au [mailto:brianbatkdfisher dot com dot au] Sent: Thursday, 11 April 2002 11:58 AM To: os2genauatos2 dot org dot au Subject: Re: [os2genau] The Malignant Secretary Bug Importance: High Daryl, Hi, while cars have four wheels etc have you tried putting somebody who only ever drove an automatic into a manual? D. Fisher, had a person like this, she seemed to be able to kill any computer I put in front of her. Ended up using her to test all new installs:- if it lasted 15min. I love it when people say, "But I didn't do anything, I just..." OK, so you DID do something! After they got used to it though, no-one crashed the system. Some of them used BOTH mouse buttons at once (on both platforms). I used to familiarize them with a "What's different and what's the same" session. Maybe that could help you :-) I guess the thing to remember is that most OS/2 users are familiar with the basic concepts of computers and can translate between various platforms. People who's only experience on computers is Windows (especially the older set who did a Microsoft based PC course at TAFE), won't know what the second mouse button is for, won't be able to differentiate between file types, and will try to delete a Word document by OPENING WORD (this would be my staff colleagues). I was suspecting a virus, a bad install, SOMETHING ! Once I changed the PS/2 mouse (an old logitech I think) for a cheapie no name, serial port mouse - everything worked fine ! I know you say other operators don't have this problem on this PC, but the new secretary might simply be faster at operating the system than the others. Do you know if she uses another PC (ie one with a completely different motherboard and hence mouse controller) does she have the same problem ? Do you have a serial mouse you can attach to the com port to test on her PC?
