I am happy to ue the LAN cards from the old machines which are 10/100 and >work well My first bit of advice is to ensure you get a plain motherboard with NO onboard peripherals. Why ? a) If something physically fails, its easy to swap a card. b) MB intergrated peripherals are more inclined to be Win type parts, ie, missing parts of hardware and replicated by Windows drivers. This ensures it will not work for OS/2, or if it does, not to well. Having the same chipset is not a sure thing it will work either :-( c) Performance is normally better with a plugin card, even though logical dictates it should be better for an onboard design.. d) Its easier to upgrade a part in the future (though a minor point) >but I would appreciate any advice about sound cards.... as far as I can work out the >usual chip is a VIA type 686B on MIS mother baords....does this sound right !? >(excuse the unintentional pun!).... I would like to enable sound in OS2 - so any >advice gratefully received.. "usual" chip means its "properly" not the one on your MB :-) http://www.os2site dot com/sw/drivers/sound/via/ Could also be an Analog Devices, Crystal, or other companies chipsets. Buying any MB with the peripherals is akin to playing russian roulette unless you have windows. With the patches that have been released for the Via drivers to enable shared interrupts, it works great - more than enough for my simple needs. If something does go wrong with the onboard support, it's simple enough to disable the onboard sound and add a PCI card. I'd agree with Ian though - make sure you're getting what you think you're getting :) Regards, Paul. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- **= Email 5 ==========================** Date: Sun, 28 Apr 2002 18:58:38 +1100 (EDT) From: "Dr Graham Norton FRACP Neurologist" Subject: Re: [os2genau] Sound Cards Hi Paul OK have downloaded the file that Ian sent me to! I'm looking at exactly the same idea, a board with"everything" ie the normal IO (EIDE, Printer, USB, PS/2 mouse, Comm etc.) plus Video, Audio and LAN. Some boards WILL cause problems from an OS/2 viewpoint ! If you have an exact make and model number for the board, there may be a spec sheet on the web we can look at. We need to know the EXACT chipset partnumbers. Here's a list (probably out of date now, that was in a download from hobbes for the CMI8330 Audio PCI SoundPro chipset. ************************************* README ************************************* Here are all the OS/2 sound card drivers I could find on the web. Where ever possible, I download the drivers from the chip manufacturer's site, unless I could detect some significant differences between the drivers (or I just wasn't sure :) ). Obviously, I make no warranty, either expressed or implied, about any of these drivers.
