I guess: 'm l' is when an application doesn't release memory it no longer needs. if your swapfile keeps growing, and growing, and growing, there is a chance you have a memory leak. generally, shutting down the suspect app will release the memory. if, after restarting same app, the swap stays at the lower setting, then, it creaps up, well, you've got a 'm l' Theseus/2 allows to find/analyze the culprits, with the REXX API, you can have something like: [F:\]swap2.cmd 62 98 6d 0h 22m 0s 914ms Swap Analysis 62 MB, 98% of it used OK, clearly this machine is suffering from 'm l' right now (it starts with 20MB swapper): swap2.cmd will actually look at internal swap utilization, so, you can see leak BEFORE swapper bloats to use use swap2 you must have thesues driver installed, go.exe & stdout.cmd on path, : swap2.cmd ---------- /* swap.cmd HD swapper free/used space */ /* must have Theseues2 installed / driver loaded */ CALL RxFuncAdd 'SysLoadFuncs', 'RexxUtil', 'SysLoadFuncs' CALL SysLoadFuncs Call RxFuncAdd 'RT2LoadFuncs', 'Theseus0', 'RT2LoadFuncs' Call RT2LoadFuncs /* output in format suitable for MRTG */ Server= stdout('hostname') 'Swap Analysis' Uptime=STRIP(SUBSTR(stdout('go -ut'),71)) parse value RT2AnalyzeSwapper() with SwapUsed SwapFree SAY format((SwapUsed+SwapFree)*4/1024,,) SAY format(100*SwapUsed/(SwapUsed+SwapFree),,0) SAY UPTIME SAY Server format((SwapUsed+SwapFree)*4/1024,,)' MB,' format(100*SwapUsed/(SwapUsed+SwapFree),,0)'% of it used' exit /* ve end Sat 24/04/1999*/ Voytek Eymont SBT Information Systems Pty Ltd http://www.sbt dot net dot au/links/ phone +61-2 9310-1144 fax +61-2 9310-1118 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- **= Email 6 ==========================** Date: Tue, 14 May 2002 12:58:31 +1000 (EST) From: "Daryl Pilkington" Subject: Re: [os2genau] M$ Office compatability (Was: SOLVED: Printing to an OS/2 box running lpd) Hi All, Yes, you'll probably be able to read M$ formats acceptably in SO or SS, but the only way to ensure exact formating integrity is to use the same version of an application that created it. M$ are not known for their cross-version or cross-platform compatability. So open it up in M$ Office & create a PDF using Windows GhostScript & RedMon configured as a PDFWriter. Describe is an excellent WP. BTW, SO v6.0 for Windows works well under ODIN, but SS v1.7 is much quicker. As for symptoms this varies depending on how long the program is running, how much RAM you have etc. A simple utility that runs for a few minutes and then exits will not exhibit any symptoms as all dynamically allocated memory is returned when a program exits. The big danger with leaks is when they are in the OS itself or in programs that run continuously, i.e. deamons, servers etc. The problem manifests as crashes due to memory access violations general lethargy of the system crashes when the swap file volume runs out of room. There is nothing you can do about it as a user because the fault is in the source code and so only a programmer with access to the source can fix it.
