Hi all Yes, its true, RC5 is over :-(, or :-), depending on your point of view ;-) http://n0cgi.distributed dot net/cgi/dnet-finger.cgi?user=bovine If you dont know what I'm talking about, thats ok, skip over it. Cheers Ian B Manners I smashed a Window and saw... The scanner doesn't produce an image, but at least it's not trapping. Another thing I've noticed, is that unless the scanner is on when I boot the machine, aspirout.sys can't get an SCSIMGR$ enrty point, doesn't load and asks to check if OS2ASPI.DMD is loaded. This doesn't happen at all on my regular machine (all atapi cd - cdr/w). Has it got something to do with the scsi card on the scanning machine? If you watch the messages from Config.sys, you'll see that it will report that it can't load the AIC driver. If that's not loaded OS2ASPI and Sane have no chance of working. It sounds to me like you now need to look at the other possible settings on the command line to get the scanner to actually run. When you execute scanner.exe does the scanner do a reset (ie does it move its scanning bar back to the start ?) You''ll hear it if it does. If it dooes that, things are looking good, if not, there may still be some problems. Cheers/2 Ed. It does scan a little, but the images have no content. I use PMView to have a look at the image and often there is an error in opening the image file. I've also noticed that it doesn't scan the whole area though. How do you force A4 scan area? Thanks for the info on external devices. I was unaware that that was the case, having never had an external device before ( other than a printer ). It's simply "best practice" to turn on external devices first. The status as the moment definately sounds positive !! Are you using a "front-end" program of any kind ? Some people use PMSANE, some prefer X-SANE (which allows the scanner to be shared over the network but needs you to install X-Windows support (XFREE86)), my choice is TAME. It allows you change scanned area format of output etc. etc. I really think you now only have to set the correct command line switches (either simply after scanner.exe on the command line or through one of the front-end programs) and you should be working. What I did initially was to define EVERY parameter to force what I wanted as, some that said they had a default setting that I wanted, actually didn't. i then went back removing parameters until it stopped working or didn't work as I wanted (wrong resolution etc) and then put that parameter back. A bit long-winded but it works ! As I said early on, once its all configured and working, you wont need to cahnge anything, it just become a device you have there and use as and when you need it. SANE should have come with documentation listing all the parameter switches you can use perhaps it lists them if you type scanimage /? ..... TAME comes with a VERY good INF file describing how everything should be set up. I have some test CMD files that I used when experimenting with my Canon scanner, I can e-mail them off-list to you if you wish. Oh yes don't forget the files default to PNM format (I think TIFF is supported but I could never get it to work, so I use PNM and convert afterwards). PMVIEW2000 can view PNM files, I've just checked by opening an image I recently scanned. Cheers/2 Ed. Gavin Miller wrote: > Ed, > > Yep the scanner does reset. Some of the option changes such as gamma causes a Trap D, as well as the -T option to fully test the backend. I created a TXT file using the --help option in scanimage to see what the scanner reports. It doesn't seem any different to the default in TAME. I am using the AV630 settings in TAME as there is no AV6240. The error message I get with PMView2000 is "Unexpected end of file" I have to say, I'm sick of all this stuffing around we have to do every time we want to use a device; any device. We have to hunt for drivers, then download THIS package so the drivers work, but you also need THIS so the PACKAGE can run properly. Then once we have everything we need, we have to try and piece it all together. I am seriously aggravated by this. No offence to all the talented people who create ways for us to use these devices. Anyway, I'll keep plugging away at it. See what happens. Sane tells the scanner to move, but no data is being collected, hence all images are BLACK. Sane finishes gathering well before the scanner has finished scanning. The scanner resests itself after a while. Hey the latest effort sane finished before the scanner started. If push comes to shove, could just use laplink for file transfer. Cross-over USB leads do exist but I've seen no OS/2 support. Don't really want to use ethernet cable as it means unplugging the existing cable, but it would work quite well with no fuss. I know what you mean about drivers and things. It's the same with CD-Burners, but as I keep saying once it's sorted EVERYTHING WILL run reliability. The up side is that the software is free. You may say the software that came with the scanner was also free but of course its cost is actually factored into the original purchase price. Actually the documentation that comes with TAME is one of the most helpful I've seen. Not only does it document how to use TAME it also explains SANE and tells you exactly what other components are needed and wher to get them from. Paul is far more skilled than I am, in this area and he helped me to get my scanner working. There was a set of runs we made that showed us where the problem setting was, it seems to me that if PMVIEW is reporting invalid end of file, SANE is failing before completion. Let me take a look at the files that I have and send them across to you off-list. Cheers/2 Ed. Gavin Miller wrote: > Ed, > > I have TAME ver 0.94 so have been trying that as well as command line.
