For anyone reading this, I can recommend the Epson 680 that Alan is offering for sale. It is supported under OS/2 on both its parrallel and USB connections and it is a 2880DPI colour printer. I use Internode, and, I am very happy with them. Based on a the simple gigabytes per dollar, they aren't the cheapest. But, they are very reliable and helpful. Apart from them, have a look at http://www.broadbandchoice dot com dot au/. They have details of all the broadband ISPs. And http://www.whirlpool dot net dot au/ has news and lots of discussion about broadband. A lot of ISPs have representatives who answer questions, so you can get some idea of the ISP. That's one of the reasons I chose Internode. > >what hardware/router to get ? stay away from ? I'm using a D-Link DSL-300 plugged into my gateway running OS/2 and the InJoy Firewall beta. Works beautifully and is extremely configurable. This sort of setup is good for someone who knows what they are doing. For others, I'd think either a DSL-500, or DSL-504 (basically the same as the 500, but, has a four port switch). These take complete control of the connection and will logon to the ISP, do NAT and other basic firewall duties. And mean you don't have to have a computer running just for the connection. There is a cheaper one around (Billion or something like that), that has the same features as the DSL-500, but, costs a lot less. The only real thing to avoid are the internal and USB ADSL modems. > >any general gotchas ? > Make sure the ISP only counts traffic in one direction. And that they don't restrict what you use the connection for. Some ISPs say you can't run servers or can't connect LANs. This is one of the reasons I like Internode. Their attitude is basically: "Your paying for it, you can do anything you want so long as you don't do anything illegal, and don't mess up our network. And NO SPAM.". Telstra's attitude seems to : "Your paying for it, but, you can't use it". -- David Forrester davidfor at internode.on dot net http://www.os2world dot com/djfos2/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- **= Email 4 ==========================** Date: Wed, 9 Oct 2002 14:23:32 From: Voytek Eymont Subject: Re: [os2genau] Oz ADSL, service ? hardware ? ** Reply to note from "David Forrester" Wed, 09 Oct 2002 12:59:13 +1000 (EST) > I use Internode, and, I am very happy with them. Also forgot to say Voytek, if you're able to get connected, Cable (from Optus or Telstra) is usually cheaper than ADSL, but read the fine print on any of these options ! Ed. Now that's a weird plan. I read this and thought you must have made a typo. But, when I looked at their web-site, it was correct. Then got out the calculator (well calculator program). $80 for 10GB at 256K isn't to bad. And it has a static IP address. That's unusual. But, the only good thing I've ever heard about TPG, is that they are cheap. -- David Forrester davidfor at internode.on dot net http://www.os2world dot com/djfos2/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- **= Email 9 ==========================** Date: Wed, 9 Oct 2002 18:05:49 From: Voytek Eymont Subject: Re: [os2genau] Oz ADSL, service ? hardware ? ** Reply to note from Ed Durrant Wed, 09 Oct 2002 14:43:45 +1000 > Also forgot to say Voytek, if you're able to get connected, Cable > (from Optus or Telstra) is usually cheaper than ADSL, but read the > fine print on any of these options ! Nah not really - all ADSL providers rely to some extent on the Telstra network, so can be subject to some of the same outages, but ADSL has been very stable for me over the last 4 months..
