Looking through the IBM support sites, there is no OS/2 drivers listed for this laptop. the trick is to go through the technical spec and even the Windoze drivers to find out waht the actual chipsets in use are. The key chipsets are the video, audio, network and more and more these days, the USB ones. In the case of the TP R31, Video, Audio and Network are all using Intel chips. Although IBM don't list drivers for OS/2 for the TP R31, once you know which chipsets are used you can go to the Intel Website and guess what ... they list current updated OS/2 drivers from March 2003. This took care of Video and NIC, however I was not having such success on audio (Intel don't list an OS/2 driver for their AC97 compatible audio chipset). Looking further through the Intel website, I found that the audio chipset is referred to as the Soundmax chipset, going back to the IBM website pulled up drivers for OS/2 for the Soundmax chipset, albeit for a T20 thinkpad not the R31, but so long as the chipset matches, it should work as well. I have installed Warp 4 CP2 on the R31 and installed the Intel network and video drivers - all work fine. I have yet to install the audio drivers (Uniaud, which was my first choice, recognises the chipset but simply doesn't give any sound out !). I have also tried Scitech Display doctor which also works but the Intel video driver seems to give a clearer image. One point to note. For some unknown reason, even when power save / hibernation is disabled in the CMOS, each time you boot when OS/2 loads VAPM.SYS, the system hibernates and you have to enter the hardware password for it to continue - solution - remove the lines that refer to APM out of config.sys - no more problems. I haven't been able to get the USB attached floppy drive to work yet, however since the USB chipset is also part of the Intel chips and Intel USB is supported by Warp, I am hopeful to sort this one out as well, very soon. So you see, just because a laptop doesn't list OS/2 it doesn't mean it wont run on it ! Cheers/2 Ed. P.S. eCS v 1.1 to go onto this very same machine in the next few days. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- **= Email 2 ==========================** Date: Wed, 14 May 2003 20:13:24 +1100 From: "Peter Rehfisch" Subject: Re: OS/2 support on current laptops Ed, I recently installed Warp 4 FP15 on a current model Thinkpad A31. The only thing I can't get to work is the (Win)Modem. I have Power Management enabled, and can use the Fn-F3 and Fn-F4 buttons to Hibernate, Resume etc. I did need to get the Veit's version of the Intel NIC card drivers from Hobbes before it would do it. The >post to Adelaide seems to be faster than to Sydney from Woodonga ! Well my copy hasn't arrived in Adelaide yet :) But I downloaded CD1 and have been running it on this machine for a couple of weeks :) FWIW - I went the reformat c: and reinstall option rather than installing over the top of eCS 1.0 - install was very smooth! Have also downloaded CD2 and CD3 but haven't done anything with them yet - gotta love Internode flatrate ADSL :) No download limits to worry about!
