Subject:   Win XP Updating.

I know it's not OS/2 related, but I'm trying to help out a friend.

She has XP, and a 56K modem connection.

Somehow she ok'ed an update, which has been slowly progressing for 
several weeks.

As soon as she logs on to Optus, the update continues, and of course it 
effects to speed of what she wants to do.
Also her account is time limited and she has been paying extra for being 
on too long.

About 90 minutes on-line the other night increased the count from 50% to 
52% completed.

So, does anyone know how to abort the update once it has started.

virtual  thinghy:
I do have a Dutch XP running there, so I'm not sure about my translation:

Start --> settings --> configurationscreen (or something like that) --> 
system

In that system folder there is a tab "Automatic updates"

Check on there: "Disable auto updates, I want to adjust the computer 
myself" (or something like that)

Albeit, DOY must look like a horror to the regular Windy user, wouldn't 
you say so? :-)

You should have told that, I'm not clairvoyant, you know?

Next to the system object there is a folder "systemmanagement" (I guess 
so it  is in English)

Open the folder, go to the folder "computermanagement", look for

"Services and applications"

Open that folder,

and doubleclick on "Services"

One of the items, probably the 5th from top, is "automatic updates". 
Open that idem, and click on:

"Stop the service" (or whatever it is is English).

BUT BEWARE!

It might well be the system will develop into nuts due to the stopped 
service, remember, we have to deal with Windy.

So, if after this operation things don't go well, I strongly recommend 
to bit the bullet and reinstall XP, will the save lady and you a lot of 
time then.
Remember, we have to deal with Windy.

And if you reinstall, don't forget NOT to connect to the modem and to 
disable all automatic thinghies this time.

And kudis for the sVista virtual PC.

I've NEVER used Asus because they're not as good as other boards and their 
nasty attitude at tech. support because of Linux. A boycott is in order. They

aren't the only ones who've had this attitude, however, and I have to think 
that MickySoft is behind at least some of it!!
