But it's fair I think to point out that going from 7200 RPM to 10,000 RPM or 10,000 RPM to 15,000 RPM gives major performance increases and often almost doubles the price of the drive. Harris Technology are never "cheap", the 146GB 10K SCSI at just over $1000 is a normal price, in fact a bit high, as the IBM x-series hot swap (in cradle) drive of the same spec costs the same. > Now, I just got to spend sometime with Dani's drivers so that it is > seen as a SCSI device so I can use CDRecord, then I can move > the aging Yamaha x6 SCSI burner to the backup server. One good tip is to download audio-CD creator. Even if you don't use this for burning CDs, it's help files, describing step by step how to setup the required additional drivers in config.sys is second to none ! > > Then, I'm going to install Smoothwall v2.0 on a spare IBM PC300 with > two NIC's and see what thats like as a firewall. > I'm guessing this is from the December APC DVD ?? I did get some off those prices, just thought I'd better quote retail. If I had to pay the full price I'd get them wholesale from somewere, so much paperwork, couldnt be bothered. And the margins are also small between wholesale and retail in the computer hardware world but if you buy one off the street at harristech, they definitly make their margin, guess thats why the business is good for them. The extra RPM for SCSI drives is worth it for the speed, and I still havent had a SCSI drive fail on me, still have my first 1GB Seagate, and a 1GB IBM SCSI drive here, the seagate is retired, the IBM is in my primary DNS server. I've lost count of the failed IDE drives I've had over the past 7 years, I did have a pile of 5 or so but ripped the PCB's off, kept the platters as coasters, and turfed them. Had another IDE fail in my secondary DNS server about 2 months ago, so thinking of putting the old seagate SCSI and and old SCSI card in that. > > Now, I just got to spend sometime with Dani's drivers so that it is > > seen as a SCSI device so I can use CDRecord, then I can move > > the aging Yamaha x6 SCSI burner to the backup server. > > One good tip is to download audio-CD creator. I just unzipped Dani's package and read the text files :-) I'm also using Chris Wohlgemuth's Data/Audio CD creater as a front end to CDRecord, and your right, just had a look in help, which is intergrated with the OS/2 help as well, very well done. The main reason I use Chris's packages are that its intergrated into the WPS so burning CD's is treated the same as anything else, (apart from clicking "Write CD" and its all object based. > > Then, I'm going to install Smoothwall v2.0 on a spare IBM PC300 with > > two NIC's and see what thats like as a firewall. > > I'm guessing this is from the December APC DVD ?? Downloaded it early, plus the 4 updates, just didnt have the time. > They've done a good job on that DVD, now if I could only get all the sounds to play > and autoload etc. to happen under OS/2 ..... I havent installed Flash7 so the cant use the APC menu, just had a look at the contents manually. Plays music/wave/mp3's ok. Previously I've just used my wifes DVD in her mac to copy files over. The 3 win machines all see each other fine, 1 of them can see the eCS box but can't see any shared resources and the eCS machine can't see any of them. I'm using straight netbios/netbeui not net... over TCP/IP. Assuming you mean replicate the blank partition from one HD to the other ? Because I dont trust harddisks, especially IDE ones, which is also why I do the Long format to make sure errors are remapped before I start using them for data backup purposes. Also if anything untoward is found I'd like to return them ASAP. Cheers Ian Manners http://www.os2site dot com/ Men are liars. We'll lie about lying if we have to. I'm an algebra liar. Thanx so much. I have the manual. Much of a day was spent trying to sort this out. Next time I'll just ask you first!
