First meeting for the year !! Date: Tuesday, 24nd Jan 2006 Time: 7:00PM - 9:00PM I will be doing a Demo of a Network/USB external box called a LanDrive. No Website details available though, which is a bit disappointing. Due to problems with my IBM T-30 Laptops USB in eCS, I will not be demo-ing the USB part. Just the Lan access. Afterwards we will be adjourning to the usual eatery at Cafe Lecco at 9.00pm. Regards, Robert Traynor (BobT). 20 January 2006 15:27 Melbourne PC Users Group premises are located at :- 2nd floor, Chadstone Place (near Bi-Lo) Chadstone Shopping Centre [ Melway 96 E4 ]. It's 40C here so Christopher is going to wait for cooler weather, but I wonder if anyone has experience with this unit, and can help us figure out what we need to do (AND not do). We have configured TCP/IP in 192.168 range. We have printed a few things with eg. drag/n/drop but some apps (in particular DeScribe wp) don't see the server and can't find the printer connected thereto. How do we "tell" its netbios about our network configurations (eg. passwords for valid users)? Over the holiday season (ha!) it was necessary to re-install OS/2-eCS on my system, so we upgraded to v1.2. Having a separate partition made it relatively painless, but we had to re-create lots of program objects, desktop tools, Warpcenter tray contents and all that boring stuff. System is quite functional once again, but a few irritations remain. One of these is in using Faxworks/PMFax. Actual operation is fine (receiving & sending faxes). However, trying to print a fax is a chore - I can't print direct out of PMFax, and I can't print a TIF created by PMFax (using say PMView Pro 3.23). I can print a DCX file of the fax (the only other option for saving the file out of PMFax) from PMView Pro, but I get a leading page of garbage, then the fax page/s print fine. What am I doing wrong, please? You shouldn't/couldn't configure it this way, it will need either a telnet or web based connected to get into it to configure it. >It's 40C here so Christopher is going to wait for cooler weather, but I >wonder if anyone has experience with this unit, and can help us figure out >what we need to do (AND not do). > >We have configured TCP/IP in 192.168 range. I do have some experience with getting HP LJ printers to go with print servers, albeit Win, so this might assist. (My networked LJ4+ is a gem provided it has warmed up/self-tested before the first print of the day is sent.) The one piece of advice which I have indelibly on my mind, from a guy who seemed to have all the answers when I was looking, is that you should use IP addressing and give the p/s a _static_ IP even if you use a DHCP server on your LAN. If the p/s will accommodate other protocols, he reckons "disable them if you can". The IP needs to fall outside the DHCP allocatable range but within the mask. (However, I don't know _why_ he reckons this to be "the way" - it might just be that it's easier for lazy installers ! OTOH, if it's a method which fails less often for hard-bitten support staff, then the advice would seem worthy of an ear. But I dunno for sure.) After that, the recommendations were : - use/get current firmware - rtfm (esp if there are switches to set) - reset everything and start fresh ("no-one else is ever the same"!!) - use the interface (web, telnet, ..) provided (ie don't try to be clever) From memory, he also thought serial connections for printers just added to the complexity, so use parallel if possible. Now, how that will tally with the expertise coming your way from people who (unlike me) actually know their os/2-ecs, and might not favour TCP/IP, I can't say. So YMMV. But after the support you've given me, I hope it helps. tj ======= John Angelico wrote: > We have just aquired a bargain print server > Intel Netport Express PRO ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- **= Email 7 ==========================** Date: Fri, 20 Jan 2006 23:15:53 +1100 (EST) From: "Voytek Eymont" Subject: Re: eCS 1.2 and printing from Faxworks/PMFax On Fri, January 20, 2006 10:43 pm, John Angelico wrote: > However, trying to print a fax is a chore - I can't print direct out of > PMFax, and I can't print a TIF created by PMFax (using say PMView Pro > 3.23). can you print from anything ? why can't you print, do you get a message saying ' you can't print direct out of PMFax' ? or what actually happens ? > I can print a DCX file of the fax (the only other option for saving the > file out of PMFax) from PMView Pro, but I get a leading page of garbage, > then the fax page/s print fine. > > What am I doing wrong, please? using wrong printer driver ?
