Not in it's abilities to work, but in my ability to find ink cartridges for it. Most notably the Photo cartridge (the 12A1990). The last one Lexmark themselves sent to us, but it must be really old stock as the Magenta and Cyan colours are really, really dull. The end result is like I've made it look like a cepia cartridge! So, I'm looking for a relatively new (so hopefully ink cartridges will be available for the next few years) and OS/2 friendly InkJet in the 1200x1200 - 2400x2400 dpi range. I realize that new and OS/2 friendly may be mutually exclusive. But one can only ask. I am extremely interested in finding out about anyone's experiences who wishes to share. I'm looking for a reasonable printer will reasonably priced replacement cartridges. -Chris WarpSpeed Computers - The Graham Utilities for OS/2. Hmm, based on this experience/problem, I would suggest that you start with your favourite supplier of compatible cartridges (out here in the east of sunny Melbourne, I use a place called Laserrib, others I know use Cartridge World) to check for cartridge availability first. Ask about common, value-for-money carts especially sep black and colour sets, and which printers they go in. > > So, I'm looking for a relatively new (so hopefully ink cartridges >will be available for the next few years) and OS/2 friendly InkJet in the >1200x1200 - 2400x2400 dpi range. After the cartridge aspect is covered, you can narrow down your search for printers NOT Win/Lose-printers NOT USB only printers NOT Canon printers (probably - their OS/2 support was horrid some time ago) and see what's left with reasonable OS/2 driver support. I have found Epson and HP to be well represented, and then Lexmark. The only inkjet model I have is an Epson Stylus C61, since we are mainly business users - hence laser and black only printing. We paid under $A100 for it 18 months ago. > I am extremely interested in finding out about anyone's experiences >who wishes to share. Driver support in eCS/OS/2 is fine if you use the German Stylus drivers, and select C60 as the model. Compatible carts for the C61 are about $24 each, and black is separate from 3-colour. Our use is very light - less than 100 pages per month of simple black/red business reports and rarely a colour 'quick-print' of a piccie. We probably don't get our usage value out of the carts but we only buy one set a year so it doesn't break the bank... Why not look at laser? Now-a-days they're becoming quite cheap to buy, but better still, very cheap to run. While my toner cartridges are $175.00 to buy, they're rated at 10,000 pages. How many pages are claimed out of each of your ink cartridges at the mo? Where a typical colour inkjet costs around 25c/page printing cost (5% coverage and all that), a typical colour laser costs around 2.5c/page. After owning 3 HP DeskJets and 1 Canon BubbleJet, I did the maths on my Brother colour laser (before I bought it) and figured that total cost of ownership was less than half that of the inkjets. Btw, the Brother I bought is a network printer and has drivers and instructions for OS/2 setup and operation (as well as Linux, Solaris, Mac and Windows) Any'ow, only a suggestion Cheers Kev -- ========================= Kev Downes kdownes at tpg dot com dot au ph 0404 7 0808 2 We use and recommend Xandros 3.0.2 ========================= There are 10 types of people ... ... those who understand binary, and those who don't! ========================= "Jesus Christ is the centre of everything and the object of everything; He who does not know him, knows nothing of the order of the world and nothing of himself." I want to be able to print photos so I stuck with the inkjet printers and was looking for six colour printers. I ended up settling on an Epson Stylus Photo R210 for $149 + delivery of $25 from ausmedia. I think they are in Melbourne. I have it connected to a Linux server running Cups and using the driver from Japan Avaya. I then network to it from my eCS machine and my daughters win2k machine. I used the Epson 810 Gimp print PPD to build a postscript driver for the new printer (I couldn't get the R210 PPD to work yet) and use this driver from eCS. It could be directly connected as well when using this driver but I think you have to use Ghostscript. I need to share the printer so this was easier as the Linux box is always running, and this way I didn't need to have my machine running for my daughter to print, especially as I also run Win XP (unfortunately) and Fedora core 5 and I could be in any one of them when she wants to print. It is possible and ausmedia will help, to set up the printer to be a continuous ink printer which greatly reduces the cost of the ink and print per page.
