I was actually trying to buy a cheap digital still camera to take some shots of my systems to send to NRMA insurance [IAG], in connection with my claim under contents insurance, following the damage caused by the lightning strike and which had an associated fireball I knew nothing about, and which apparently travelled about 400 m up one of the roads in this "retirement" village, as well as taking a snap of a SCART [AKA Euro-AV connector - saves having separate bunch of cables for audio/video/S-video etc, allowing me to feed the output from my standard definition Set Top Box to two Sony VCRs, a 1999 SLV-T2000AS HiFi Dual deck with both Super VHS and Hi8, and also my 1983 SLC9E, [AU$1545 when nothing else on the market was over AU$450 - can go from 60x FF to single-frame reverse etc!!], but couldn't get anything that would take macro photos under about AU$500 - walked past "Crazy John's Mobile Phones - and just asked whether the cameras built-in to some of their mobiles could take a snap of the SCART item that was in my pocket - they demonstrated this with the phone I then "bought" on a $20/month plan which includes $15 free calls/month. So far I have had trouble with the memory card in the phone - it's a 64MB SanDisk Transflash [Micro SD RAM Card] only about 6mm long and 4mm wide. After the event I discovered that it was formatted with VFAT12, so that it has LFN support, but is much more space efficient than it would be if formatted FAT32 or VFAT16 -- Motorola provide an adapter that allows it to be inserted into a standard size SDRAM slot in any reader [I bought a 33-in-1 reader for AU$39.99 from Tandy Corp], and under OS/2-eCS I can see the entire contents but only as 8.3 directory|file names - the directory structure has the following setup: The volume label in drive K is Am. [the A = 0x41 is the VFAT indicator - the "m" is the low byte of the Unicode name of the "Mobile" directory in the root (high byte is 0x00), which precedes the 8.3 name there!] The Volume Serial Number is 3532:3239. DFSee sees the card as having a mismatch between the 476 x 8 x 63 [CHS in MBR] and the 59 x 64 x 32 in the primary partition DBR! Following article was in the UK PC Advisor magazine - I am subscribed to their e-mail newsletter: [from : http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/news/index.cfm?newsid=6279] Orange joins free broadband party Follows Vodafone's lead Nancy Gohring Orange today introduced an offering that gives free broadband service to its mobile subscribers in the UK, the second indication this week that mobile operators are using broadband as a way to retain customers. The announcement follows Vodafone's announcement yesterday that it will start offering broadband services to its mobile customers , first in Germany and then in other markets. Orange had said previously that it would combine its broadband and mobile services in the UK under the Orange brand. France Télécom owns both Orange and Wanadoo, the brand previously used for its broadband service . Only Orange customers who subscribe to a post-pay plan of £30 or more per month are eligible for the free broadband offering, which also includes a wireless modem and a VoIP (voice over IP) service. Mobile operators are keen for customers to switch to post-pay plans because they guarantee a certain level of revenue each month. This offering could help drive that migration, said John Delaney, an analyst with Ovum. Subscribers must also commit to an 18-month contract, so the deal may also be aimed at retaining customers. "The idea behind it may be for Orange to try to reduce customer churn or improve customer loyalty," said Martin Gutbertlet, an analyst at Gartner. Customer retention was also behind Vodafone's broadband announcement. "The new reality is that competition is intensifying," Arun Sarin, Vodafone's CEO, said yesterday. Even though Orange and Vodafone are pursuing the bundled strategy, other mobile operators may not follow suit. Judging from past comments and overall strategies, O2 and T-Mobile are unlikely to start offering broadband services, Gutbertlet said. BTW I was using a USB2 connection from my ISDN modem to the PC for the last few months prior to being able to have ADSL - I had used the /COM:5 switch on usbcom - also under InJoy Dialer 2.30/3.03 [last free update] - but as eCSCoNet also works with ISDN/ADSL [European ISDN up to 8Mbps!], I wonder whether you wouldn't get a much better rate with that than InJoy? For a laugh - one of the IAG "preferred" supppliers was going to provide me with a 73GB 10K rpm SCSI drive [80-pin = SCA], and an Adaptec AHA-2930U [50-pin!!!!] HBA to replace my AHA-29160, as part of a complete system replacement!! -- Regards, Mike Failed the exam for -------------------- MCSE - Minesweeper Consultant and Solitaire Expert -------------------- [Please ZIP any attachments, other than GIF/JPG or plain-text] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- **= Email 2 ==========================** Date: Fri, 02 Jun 2006 08:34:00 +1000 From: Ed Durrant Subject: Re: Aussie Mobile Internet for OS/2 - eCS [LONG posting!] Mike O'Connor wrote: >> > Hi Ed, Hi Mike > > FWIW, I just happened to "buy" for $0 a Motorola RAZR V3x [3G with 2MP > camera for stills & video - Streaming video etc.], and it has the same > facilities for either using the PC as the source or the destination. > I was actually trying to buy a cheap digital still camera to take some > shots of my systems to send to NRMA insurance [IAG], in connection with > my claim under contents insurance, > So far I have had trouble with the memory card in the phone - it's a > 64MB SanDisk Transflash [Micro SD RAM Card] only about 6mm long and 4mm > wide. Kb is (as I guess you know) Kilo bits not Kilo Bytes. Sounds to me like the card needs re-formatting - does the phone/camera not have this capability ?? I think you'll have to do it in the device, not from the PC unless some software was supplied with the phone, specifically for the purpose. The WP Root and EA Data items displayed must have been put there by OS/2 or eCS and that could be why it becomes unhappy as described below: > > and it no longer allows me to save stills or video onto the card - makes > the (default) shutter "click", but says "Media error" or "Unable to save > Picture" - removing the Transflash card allows me again to save both > onto the phone's memory - when a card is inserted it automatically > becomes the default storage area! Orange and Three in Australia are now joined, they are different companies to the same named companies in the UK and if you say France Telecom own Orange, that's strange as I thought Hutchinson owned then all ! So I guess France telecom franchised the name and now Hutchinson are pulling its companies back in together in the UK in a similar way to what has happened here in Australia. > > Orange joins free broadband party > > > Follows Vodafone's lead > > Nancy Gohring > > Orange > today introduced an offering that gives free broadband > service to > its mobile subscribers in the UK, the second indication this week > that mobile operators are using broadband as a way to retain customers. > > The announcement follows Vodafone's announcement yesterday that it > will start offering broadband services to its mobile > customers > , first in > Germany and then in other markets. > > Orange had said previously that it would combine its broadband and > mobile services in the UK under the Orange brand. I have also seen Injoy under load - it works VERY WELL - I would suspect that Injoy will be quicker than eCSoNet - the limiting factor is more likely to be the speed possible across the USB connection and of course the service speed, though the phone being far less than 8Mb/s it doesn't really matter ! As I said in the article, other PPP dialers should be able to be used if the user has a different preference. > For a laugh - one of the IAG "preferred" supppliers was going to provide > me with a 73GB 10K rpm SCSI drive [80-pin = SCA], and an Adaptec > AHA-2930U [50-pin!!!!] HBA to replace my AHA-29160, as part of a > complete system replacement!! > Are they also supplying the required 50-80 pin convertor dongle and appropriate cables ? I > would send it to my sister who lives "up the road" from you, but I > don't think she would understand. :-) Just a word of warning. I got the same offer from Orange, and went on to an $18/month plan and got a Motorola RAZR V3x. (This commits me to a 24-month plan, but after that I have the option to transfer to another provider if I want to. The other phones on offer required only a 12-month commitment, but for some unknown reason were not ever transferable to another provider.) I noticed the option to use the phone as a broadband modem, but in my opinion it was a bad deal except for a very low-usage user. It looks very cheap, but people on the Broadband Choice web site (a good place to visit if you want to compare broadband providers) have repeatedly pointed out that any deal that includes a "per MB" component can turn out to be very expensive, because you use up those megabytes at a surprisingly high rate. Normally you would be better off going for a deal with a fixed monthly charge and either "unlimited downloads" or a system where your speed is reduced each time you go over your monthly quota. As for the built-in camera: I've managed to transfer files to an from a Windows computer to the phone, but have had no luck so far with eCS. The phone detects the USB connection but the computer doesn't. This probably implies a file system for which I don't have a driver. I installed FAT32 last night, but it didn't help. However, I haven't explored this option much so far - I'm not terribly interested in taking photos - so my failure is not necessarily final. The next time I plug it into a Windows machine I'll try to see what file system it is using (if I can work out how to do that in Windows). Slightly off-topic: I'll soon be searching for a new Broadband provider, because my contract with Optus will soon expire. Actually, Optus has turned out to be not too bad (except for their crappy crippled broadband modem that needs resetting every few weeks to detect the new lease), so I might first ask them whether they'll permit me to run servers. They probably won't, in which case I'll make sure I let them know that that's why I'm going to cancel the contract. At the end of last year I had a shortlist of providers that do permit servers, but things have probably changed by now, so it'll be back to a long search through Broadband Choice. -- Peter Moylan peter at ozebelg dot org peter.moylan at optusnet dot com dot au http://www.pmoylan dot org Please note the changed e-mail and web addresses. The domain eepjm.newcastle.edu.au no longer exists, and I can no longer reliably receive mail at my newcastle.edu.au addresses. As always, one should look at the various conditions of any plan that one takes up - in my case, this one saved me money. I don't expect to be a major user of mobile broadband hence both the normal phone (used 90% of the time to call others on the same network for free) and the broadband rates fit my needs. I was more enthusiastic about the fact that the technology actually works under OS/2 and eCS using programs and drivers that we already have. If you are looking for cable (and don't mind switching TV providers as well), BigpondCable / Foxtel, allow you to run servers on their cable service. This service has recently been upgraded and now offers a 17Mb/s download and 512Kb/s upload "extreme" option. They are pretty price competitive with ADSL plans from other Telcos, which is a surprise ! If you're looking for ADSL, I would recommend Internode. I was very impressed with this company when I first met them in Adelaide supporting one of my customers' internet needs. They were competant, flexible and helpful. I'm sure since they have grown from an Adelaide only company to have national coverage, there will have been some upset customers on one item or another, however everyone I have talked to who use them are very happy. They were also the first to install ADSL2 in Australia, so they invest in technology to drive the market forwards. As I am on an exchange that hasn't been and isn't planned to be, upgraded to ADSL2, I'm sticking to my Telstra Cable for now. It supports my internet needs, TV needs and cheap VOIP calls. Just a word of warning. I got the same offer from Orange, and went on to
an $18/month plan and got a Motorola RAZR V3x. (This commits me to a
24-month plan, but after that I have the option to transfer to another
provider if I want to. The other phones on offer required only a
12-month commitment, but for some unknown reason were not ever
transferable to another provider.) I noticed the option to use the phone
as a broadband modem, but in my opinion it was a bad deal except for a
very low-usage user. It looks very cheap, but people on the Broadband
Choice web site (a good place to visit if you want to compare
broadband providers) have repeatedly pointed out that any deal that
includes a "per MB" component can turn out to be very expensive, because
you use up those megabytes at a surprisingly high rate. Normally you
would be better off going for a deal with a fixed monthly charge and
either "unlimited downloads" or a system where your speed is reduced
each time you go over your monthly quota.

As for the built-in camera: I've managed to transfer files to an from a
Windows computer to the phone, but have had no luck so far with eCS. The
phone detects the USB connection but the computer doesn't. This probably
implies a file system for which I don't have a driver. I installed FAT32
last night, but it didn't help. However, I haven't explored this option
much so far - I'm not terribly interested in taking photos - so my
failure is not necessarily final. The next time I plug it into a Windows
machine I'll try to see what file system it is using (if I can work out
how to do that in Windows).

Slightly off-topic: I'll soon be searching for a new Broadband provider,
because my contract with Optus will soon expire. Actually, Optus has
turned out to be not too bad (except for their crappy crippled broadband
modem that needs resetting every few weeks to detect the new lease), so
I might first ask them whether they'll permit me to run servers. They
probably won't, in which case I'll make sure I let them know that that's
why I'm going to cancel the contract. At the end of last year I had a
shortlist of providers that do permit servers, but things have probably
changed by now, so it'll be back to a long search through Broadband Choice.

Windows recognises that it is VFAT12 - OS/2-eCS thinks it is just FAT12, so the directory structure gets screwed up if appending to the card from our OS! Here's a look at the data on a 1GB regular size SDRAM card that I bought from DSE yesterday for my new Palm Tungsten E2 [$339 on special til 11th June] almost exactly the same formatting as the Motorola Transflash - VFAT12, although they both label the DBR as FAT16 - I'll have a chat to Chris [GU] to see whether he could extend the GU to include a VFAT [12 & 16] to the current suite. Using my Favourite Text Editor [V-Edit] to open the SDRAM Card it shows: Cut the following and look at it in System Vio10 in any editor! I tried [successfully] formatting it [1GB] as FAT32, but on reinserting it in the PALM, that said (roughly) "can't read the card", but at least the PALM successfully re-formatted the card back to the specs it wanted - whereas with the Motorola it reckoned there were 4GB in use on the (total capacity 0.00KB of the) 64MB Transflash - and on using the Phone's format menu item - after about 0.1 secs it said "Format failed - wanna try again??"! I'd say it's definitely the two root entries for EA DATA. SF and WP ROOT. SF, and their associated data that it doesn't like! VFATMon v1.2 Copyright Jason Stefanovich, 2004 VFATMon monitors drives and converts VFAT long file names to EAs. This program really shouldn't need to exist, but it does...Why? Because many of today's popular flash drives are formatted for Fat16/VFAT and VFAT.IFS does not support removable/hot swappable media. If it did, or if the Removable Device Monitor supported some options to call external programs, there would be no need for this kludge. No, I don't want to reformat my drives to NTFS, HPFS or anything else (and on some devices that rely upon a specific format, this is *not* a good idea). Hi Ed, No I don't consider it would unfortunately. A big part of the problem is that it's not just file[|dir]names that exceed the 11 characters of the 8.3 format that have [under Windoze] Unicode long file[|dir]names, but any < 8.3 ditto that has _mixed_ case! The mixed-case version is used for the LFN directory entry, but is uppercased for the 8.3 entry! Reading off the cards etc. isn't the main problem - it's writing new entries from OS/2-eCS or modifying existing entries. The final entry of a LFN always starts with 0x41 ['A'], and is the unicode representation of the beginning of the long file name and is preceded by later parts of that LFN, such that the very first entry in the multiple entries for any LFN contains the final part of the name, whereas the [regular non-unicode] 8.3 flavour entry in the directory follows the 32-byte entry for the start of the LFN! Talk about putting the Cart before the horse! I'm going to have a go at forcing the existing contents of a VFAT12 disk onto one formatted [and readable/writable by OS/2-eCS] as FAT32 under W2KPro. Will let you all know how I go. > Ok, How about this then: VFAT2EA version v1.31 --------------------- Introduction: - - - - - - - For FAT partitions, WinXX can assign long filenames to files, and saves them in the directory structure. This partition type is called VFAT. OS/2 is not able to use these long filenames (except by using VFAT IFS), just the short aliases. By using VFAT2EA, you'll be able to see, and even copy these long filenames *in the WPS*! (Or in any program which manages .LONGNAME EAs, like the included rxcopy one.) VFAT2EA converts VFAT Long Filenames to OS/2's .LONGNAME Extended Attributes, which is the standard way in OS/2 to store the long filenames for every file or directory on a partition, which does not support long filenames. For using OS/2 written long filenames in WinXX, use the /B switch. It will convert back all .LONGNAME Extended Attributes to VFAT Long Filenames. Before using it, please read all this readme file! These are utilities on the DVD I sent you a while ago (are you able to read my Burnt DVD-Rs yet ?) I'm surprised that VFAT12 even exists, because the reason for the invention of FAT16 (FAT12 was the original DOS file system) was that FAT12 because grossly inefficient once floppies got as large as 1.2MB. (You could use it only by having a large cluster size.) I see that there's a VFAT IFS by Daniel Steiner on Hobbes. I don't know anything about it, but it might be worth a try. > Here's a look at the data on a 1GB regular size SDRAM card that I > bought from DSE yesterday for my new Palm Tungsten E2 [$339 on > special til 11th June] almost exactly the same formatting as the > Motorola Transflash - VFAT12, although they both label the DBR as > FAT16 - I'll have a chat to Chris [GU] to see whether he could extend > the GU to include a VFAT [12 & 16] to the current suite. Years ago I wrote disk drivers for DOS that would work with both FAT12 and FAT16, and as far as I recall they autodetected which one was which. (It was part of a library for writing multithread programs for DOS. I had to write all my own device drivers because MS-DOS device drivers used BIOS routines, and the stupid BIOS used to enable interrupts when they were supposed to be disabled, so the DOS device drivers couldn't be trusted.) I'd be happy to give that code to Chris or to anyone else who's willing to write a VFAT IFS. (As I understand it, VFAT is almost identical to FAT, except that it uses two directory entries per file. Even though I've written device drivers for bare machines, I have no experience into how to do it for OS/2. Cable isn't available in Newcastle. I've been approached by Foxtel salespeople several times, and each time I've said I might be interested if they had good terms for broadband computer connections, because that was the only part of what they were offering that was worth anything. (I rarely watch sport on TV, I have little interest in watching reruns of ancient programs, the movies are rarely as good as what SBS offers, and Fox News doesn't have much of a reputation for telling the truth.) The answer, each time, is that their "cable" service is actually delivered by satellite, so they can't offer broadband. > If you're looking for ADSL, I would recommend Internode. I've noticed good reviews for Internode in the past, so I'll definitely look at them. Anyway, thanks to everyone who's given suggestions. I'm saving the entire thread, and once I go through it it looks as though I'll already be down to a shortlist of only 3 or 4 possibilities, which will simplify the investigation enormously. -- Peter Moylan peter at ozebelg dot org peter.moylan at optusnet dot com dot au http://www.pmoylan dot org Please note the changed e-mail and web addresses.
