First it was Connectix with VirtualPC (bought by Microsoft) , then it was Parallels with SVista (bought by some US investors but kept the Parallels name), now it's Innotek and virtualbox being bought by SUN Microsystems ! In this case this is a bigger problem for eComStation than the previous actions as, as well as Virtualbox, Innotek has provided OS/2 versions of Adobe reader and flash player as well as their version of ODIN and the original compilation of VirtualPC/2. It appears SUN is buying several "open source" companies working on open source projects including MySQL. The question is what happens to these open source projects ? Is their direction changed or curtailed by SUN ? Admitably Open Office (Star Office) is doing well under the SUN "parentage" lets hope the other projects also continue ! It's got to only be a matter of time before someone buys Mozilla Corp. and has control of the Firefox / Seamonkey / Thunderbird products. I suspect this is a problem when open source "communities" become companies or companies take a large lead in the development. Open source can suddenly become "controlled source". Cheers/2 Ed. P.S. - here's a strange fact - type innotek in Thunderbird and run the spell checker and comes back with the nearest match as bank notes !! That's got to mean something ! - try it yourself. -------- Original Message -------- Subject: [VOICENWS] Net: Sun Microsystems said Tuesday it plans to acquire innotek Date: Tue, 12 Feb 2008 14:47:54 -0500 From: madodel Reply-To: marko at os2voice dot org, feedback at os2voice dot org To: news at os2voice dot org ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice dot org ++ From: Mark Overholser "Sun Microsystems said Tuesday it plans to acquire innotek, which provides the VirtualBox open source virtualization software package." http://weblog.infoworld dot com/techwatch/archives/015882.html?source=NLC-TECHWATCH&cgd=2008-02-12 A complete press release on the acquisition can be found on Sun's web site: http://www.sun dot com/aboutsun/pr/2008-02/sunflash.20080212.1.xml -- For a choice in the future of personal computing, Join VOICE - http://www.os2voice dot org [Moderator's note: All posts are sent without guarantee to the accuracy of the content.
