MSN Search and a lot of other search engines are banned due to ignoring robots.txt, so I've done my best to minimise the traffic (apart from yahoo and google). Also banned large chunks of China and USA for various reasons (mainly hosting company IP ranges). I clamped down on the mirroring a few years back, and the logs simply show a big increase in browsing and picking files here and there, no country in particular. I also have copies/mirrors of various FTP sites which are not publically available, ie, ftp.pc.ibm dot com ftp.scitechsoft dot com ftp.software.ibm dot com hobbes (proper)etc. leo walnut If I ever end up with a better connection and cheaper data I'll put those in the public section as well. Also a bit miffed that I didnt beat last years high score in the stats yesterday, that would have made it 3/4 of the year, now its one day out :-( Suggestions are always welcome re site improvements, though I still havent had the time to figure out how to display a directory listing in "date sorted" order in C, everytime I start I get sidetracked. Should see if the filepage code compiles under GCC, currently still using Watcom 11.0C. People ask me why I dont use one of the freely available PHP and MySQL database file database stuff for the web. The good thing about using filepage.exe and a couple of rexx scripts with non TCP/IP Cron, its all very secure :-) Though I do use Perl, PHP, Python, and MySQL on the server, none of if is for web accessible stuff but for behind the scene stuff. Still, not bad for a part time hobby. Now I'm going to have to fire up Explorer on my Windows laptop to see whether my pages are there. If they are, it might be worth putting in some sort of web proxy that will serve up some sort of "All Microsoft software is a pile of shit" page to unauthorised clients. Time to turn web logging on, anyway. I haven't bothered with that in the past. My experience when I look at the on-screen status window of web/2 is that most hits are from Google search engines. Not long ago, some people were getting letters from M$ asking them to remove the msnbot ban from their robots.txt. (I didn't get one; maybe they didn't consider my site to be worth indexing.) If they were ignoring robots.txt, why bother sending the letters? -- Peter Moylan peter at pmoylan dot org http://www.pmoylan dot org ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- **= Email 4 ==========================** Date: Thu, 02 Oct 2008 12:36:20 +1000 From: Peter Moylan Subject: Recommendations for remote control program? As part of a furniture rearrangement, I'd like to set up one of my computers as a pure server with no keyboard or monitor. What's a good way to control it from my desktop machine? I can use INIServe to control my own software, and do a lot of the rest of what I want to do via FTP, but there will surely be times when I want to get in and do other things. I've used Desktop on Call in the past, and that's what I'll do if nobody has a better recommendation. (And I see that Hobbes has a copy; in fact it seems to be a copy of version 5, which I think is the one developed by IBM Japan and then never released once IBM declared OS/2 to be dead. My recollection of that is that the Windows version tended to crash, but that the OS/2 version was good except for some keyboard problems with something like the Ctrl key.) I have vague memories, however, that some people were recommending something different. This is only for controlling OS/2 from OS/2. Support for other operating systems is not really needed. -- Peter Moylan peter at pmoylan dot org http://www.pmoylan dot org ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- **= Email 5 ==========================** Date: Thu, 02 Oct 2008 12:44:50 +1000 (EST) From: "Ian Manners" Subject: Re: Curious Hi Peter, >Not long ago, some people were getting letters from M$ asking them to >remove the msnbot ban from their robots.txt. MSBot's pages state they obey robots.txt directives, including statements such as :- Disallow: /wpi/ Allow: /sitemap.xml$ Allow: /*.html$ Allow: /*.htm$ Allow: /*.txt$ Allow: /*.link$ Disallow: /*.*$ but infact MSBot only seems to act on Disallow: / so its either all or none. There are also MS Test Bot's that read the robots.txt, decide that User-agent: * doesnt apply to them, so I simply banned the entire 65.55.0.0 range. Makes my life a lot easier. Part of the problem with bots and os2site is that bots download *.wpi and other files as they dont understand what *.wpi is, even though I have done as there pages have asked and notified them. Got to give Google and Yahoo there due, they firmly believe, and act, on the principle of. "It's your website, your rules, we obey". Umm, after watching #2 son Chris do things here with simple NET ADMIN, may I ask how much you expect to want to do? If it's not much, could you get by with nothing more special than NET ADMIN (assuming you will be running Netbios)? Seems to be slightly slower than DTOC, but perhaps that's just my memory. It did work right out of the box. The colours are terrible, sometimes to the extent that things on the screen are unreadable, but I'm used to that from things like Acrobat and Java applications ... in fact, everything that was written with SNAP Graphics in mind. I'm still not sure what to do about that problem. I have a Matrox Millennium video card for which the SNAP driver crashes the OS, so I've always had to use native Matrox video drivers. One of these days, I guess, I'll have to switch video cards. Or maybe just buy a new box. I've heard that it's possible to buy a decent PC for about $200-$300 if you don't buy a complete system, i.e. if you use your old monitor/keyboard/mouse/speakers. I haven't yet checked out what's available that is eCS-compatible; would be interested to hear if other people know of such deals with eCS-compatible hardware. -- Peter Moylan peter at pmoylan dot org http://www.pmoylan dot org ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- **= Email 12 ==========================** Date: Thu, 2 Oct 2008 23:03:35 +1000 (EST) From: "Voytek Eymont" Subject: Re: Recommendations for remote control program? > Or maybe just buy a new box.
