It has a Gigabyte GA-945GM-S2 motherboard which I have managed to get everything working except the NIC. It is listed as having a Realtek RTL8111B chip. Anyone have any hints as all my research seems to indicate that I am going to have to drop a PCI card with compatible chip into it. If I am going to have to go this route is there any wireless cards around that have OS/2 drivers as it would be nice to be able to tap into the wireless setup we have here. TIA Andrew Hood PS: I just love the way I have been able to upgrade three times so far just by slotting the harddrive into a new chassis, adjust the config.sys and drivers to suit, and away it goes. Same install I did just over seven years ago tweaked a few times. I might need to give the .ini files a cleanup soon though. -------------------------------------------------- http://www./melbpc/ - The Melbourne OS/2 SIG === **= Email 4 ==========================** Date: Sun, 24 Jan 2010 10:00:30 +1100 From: Peter Moylan Subject: Re: Help with NIC drivers On 24/01/10 09:23, andrew.hood2 at bigpond dot com wrote: > If I am going to have to go this route is there any wireless > cards around that have OS/2 drivers as it would be nice to be able to > tap into the wireless setup we have here. For wireless I use something called a "Wireless Access Point". It's not the cheapest approach, but it has the advantage that it plugs into an ethernet port, i.e. you only need driver software for your ethernet interface, not any wireless driver, so in effect it's independent of operating system. I've tried two: a DWL-G730AP and an ASUS WL-330gE. They both worked well. I preferred the DWL device because it was powered via USB, whereas the ASUS one remains powered up even when the computer is turned off. (To turn it off, I would have to crawl about under my desk.) Unfortunately the DWL suddenly failed several months ago, possibly because of a storm, so I'm left with only the one. I bought both of these on-line, by searching for a good price. -- Peter Moylan peter at pmoylan dot org http://www.pmoylan dot org -------------------------------------------------- http://www./melbpc/ - The Melbourne OS/2 SIG === **= Email 5 ==========================** Date: Sun, 24 Jan 2010 11:10:04 +1100 From: Ed Durrant Subject: Re: Help with NIC drivers Peter Moylan wrote: > On 24/01/10 09:23, andrew.hood2 at bigpond dot com wrote: > > >> If I am going to have to go this route is there any wireless >> cards around that have OS/2 drivers as it would be nice to be able to >> tap into the wireless setup we have here. >> > > For wireless I use something called a "Wireless Access Point". If you have a free PCI slot however , I'd get an Intel Pro/1000 MT desktop adapter - it works with the IBM "ethernet drive for gigabit". I got a couple on ebay lately (one single port, one dual port). Here's a single port one: http://cgi.ebay dot com dot au/INTEL-8390MT-PRO-1000-MT-Gigabit-PCI-NETWORK-CARD-NEW_W0QQitemZ260472781304QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item3ca56339f8 at less than $15 (AUS) - there are several more - note you need the MT model not the GT one however if you get a GT model, it appears that GenMU may support that (dependant upon exact model), easier to go with the MT and it's native driver support. As for WiFi, there are some PCI card based WiFi cards supported by GenMAC - you'll need to check models supported in the Genmac package: These were the ones supported in v 2.0 - for later releases of the package you have to install the package on your PC with the card installed and the wpi will tell you if you have a supported card: 3Com 3C90xC PCI [10B7:9200] 3Com/SKNet Gigabit [10B7:1700] 3Com/SKNet Gigabit [1148:4320] 3Com/SKNet Gigabit [11AB:4320] 3Com/SKNet Gigabit [11AB:4362] ASUS Wlan RT2400 [1814:0101] Atheros Wlan [168C:0012] Atheros Wlan [168C:0013] Atheros Wlan [168C:1014] Broadcom 10/100 [14E4:170C] Broadcom 10/100 [14E4:4400] Broadcom 10/100 [14E4:4401] Broadcom A/B/G [14E4:4324] Broadcom B/G [14E4:4318] Broadcom B/G [14E4:4320] Broadcom Gigabit [14E4:165D] Broadcom Gigabit [14E4:1677] Broadcom Gigabit [14E4:167D] CISCO mPCI [14B9:A504] Dlink DWL-520+ [104C:8400] Dlink DWL-G520+ [104C:9066] GN-WI01GS RT61 [1814:0301] GN-WI01GS RT61 [1814:0302] GN-WI01GS RT61 [1814:0401] Intel 10/100 [8086:1229] Intel 10/100/1000 [8086:101E] Intel 10/100/1000 [8086:1076] Intel 10/100/1000 [8086:109A] Intel 2100 Wlan [8086:1043] Intel 2200 Wlan [8086:4220] Intel 2915 a/b/g [8086:4223] Intel 2915 a/b/g [8086:4224] Intel 3945 a/b/g [8086:4222] Marvel 802.11 b/g [11AB:1FA6] Marvel 802.11 b/g [11AB:1FA7] Rtl 8168 GigaBit [10EC:8168] Rtl 8169 GigaBit [10EC:8169] Rtl 8180 Wlan [10EC:8180] nForce 2 10/100 [10DE:0066] nForce 3 10/100 [10DE:00D6] nForce 4 10/100/1000 [10DE:0057] -- Cheers/2 Ed eComStationAustralia podcast http://eComStationAustralia.podbean dot com or iTunes -------------------------------------------------- http://www./melbpc/ - The Melbourne OS/2 SIG === **= Email 6 ==========================** Date: Sat, 23 Jan 2010 17:22:16 -0700 From: Chuck McKinnis Subject: Re: Help with NIC drivers The access point/bridge device works well for desktops that you want to access a wireless network with. I have experience with 3, 2 from SMC and 1 from Netgear. The older SMC requires a firmware re-load to switch from access point mode to bridge mode, the newer ones have enough memory for firmware to allow switching modes without a re-load. I use one SMC running as a bridge from my wife's old Netfinity machine to the other SMC running as an access point on my router. You should be able to find used bridges. Another option is a Linksys WRT54G (or other wireless router that is supported by DD-WRT) with DD-WRT running in repeater mode. I picked up one of these on eBay the other day for $22 US (including shipping). Wired my T61 to it, connected the Linksys to my SMC wireless access point and was into the net.
