If its anything like xCenter (part of xworkplace), possibly unstall it, run an ini cleaner then reinstall it. I see in C:\os2\xworkplace\install there is freshini.cmd and deinst.cmd files that looks interesting. Might eCenter have something similiar? > Or should I just delete widgets from the properties notebook, until I > get a version that doesn't crash? I use xcenter, and somewere over the years I've stopped using all widgets for it as the system is just to unstable. You might also like to ensure you have cleaned your os2*.ini files by running on a nice clean boot some or the following commands. You might already be doing this so ignore if you are :) Note, I always exit out of xcenter before running these. Run the following several times until your desktop stops restarting. cleanini /DelAll /multipass /LogDel /c /Restart Then I will run this one. checkini /C /Y:2 When I remember it I will also run checkini /C /T and Checkini /h /c will remove entries in ini files that hang around. It's possible that, while searching through directories and folders, I've fixed my problem. Quite a few months ago, while trying to fix another eCenter problem, I accidentally created an extra eCenter, and I never figured out how to delete the redundant one. Now I've discovered that I have an eCenter2 in my "Installed software" folder and an eCenter in the "Utilities" folder. The eCenter crashes, the eCenter2 doesn't, so all I needed to do was start using the "2" version. Once I'm confident that it's working, I'll delete the other one. However, I'll retain the rest of this response, written before the above discovery, because of some comments on other issues. > If its anything like xCenter (part of xworkplace), possibly unstall > it, run an ini cleaner then reinstall it. > > I see in C:\os2\xworkplace\install there is freshini.cmd and > deinst.cmd files that looks interesting. Might eCenter have something > similiar? Thanks for the help. I've found a directory C:\ecs\system\eWPS\install that has similar scripts. I guess I'll have to create custom copies of those that only affect the eCentre without touching anything else. I'll try working on that. I've realised that I've become really dependent on the "Drives" widget in the eCenter. Opening up the Drives folder is somewhat less convenient. Likewise I've now forgotten how to search for a file in the file system, because the eCenter provided a suitable search. The "Find Objects" in the right-click desktop menu is far less convenient because it's an object-oriented approach rather than a filesystem approach. I used to know the name of the program that searches for a file, but I've forgotten it because I haven't needed it for so long. There are some weaknesses in the eCenter support. The manual, hidden in an unexpected directory, has stuff about the Warp 3 version of eCenter, so there are things in there that are wrong or obsolete. (Obviously someone has done a rush job of renaming and editing the XWorkplace documentation.) The Install/Remove utilities make no mention of eCenter, except in one place: there is a utility to configure eComCenter, but when you run it you get a message that eComCenter has been replaced by the better eCenter. >> Or should I just delete widgets from the properties notebook, until >> I get a version that doesn't crash? > I use xcenter, and somewere over the years I've stopped using all > widgets for it as the system is just to unstable. eCenter is better in that respect. Some of the XWorkPlace bugs were never fixed, and as I recall it eCenter was created by stripping out the buggy features. > You might also like to ensure you have cleaned your os2*.ini files by > running on a nice clean boot some or the following commands. Good advice, and it gave me partial success. Running CleanINI fixed the eCenter problem, and then running Checkini brought the problem back. I used to use CheckINI a lot, but then I stopped using it (and switched to the less powerful CleanINI) for a reason I've now forgotten. It's possible that it's because it turned out to be incompatible with eCS. A pity, because I can no longer archive my desktop because I have too many undeletable old desktops, and I really need to get around to working out how to delete them. -- Peter Moylan peter at pmoylan.org http://www.pmoylan.org A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text.
