I'm having a bad run at the moment, and again need some help. My monitor gave up the ghost this morning, so I bought a new one. (ACER KA240HC.) That made all my text too wide, so I set the video to a higher resolution. That just gave me an "unsupported resolution" on reboot. OK, I thought I knew how to handle that, because I've done it before. On the next reboot I reset the resolution to VGA. So far, so good. But now I find that I've forgotten how to get out of VGA mode. It's pretty clear that all the needed files are in C:\Panorama, and probably also in C:\OS2. I can't use Selective Install to fix the problem that way, because I don't have the installation disks. The relevant part of my CONFIG.SYS is shown below. What am I missing? DEVICE=C:\OS2\MDOS\VSVGA.SYS SET VIDEO_DEVICES=VIO_SVGA SET VIO_SVGA=DEVICE(BVHVGA,BVHSVGA) SET GRADD_CHAINS=C1 DEVICE=C:\OS2\GRADD.SYS DEVICE=C:\OS2\MDOS\VMANWIN.SYS SET GREEXT=SDDGREXT SET C1=SDDGRADD -- Peter Moylan peter at pmoylan.org http://www.pmoylan.org A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text. Found a "Acer KA240HQ 23.6 LCD Monitor" on Officeworks but they dont actually state the pixel's apart from "The monitor has a Full HD resolution". Further searching tells me it is 1920 x 1080. I cant see a KA240HQ on Officeworks or the acer.com website. I'm checking that because if the monitor is a higher resolution that could cause problems. I still use Snap graphics with a Samsung SA300 1920 x 1080 LED panel but with some other brands I've tried I had to add the resolution info to Snap. SNAP actually grabbed the parameters from the SA300 and ran with that - moden panels dont seem to provide that information anymore, or at least the acers dont, they seem to only provide model number for Windows boxes. > OK, I thought I knew how to handle that, because I've done it before. Check your current resolutions after installing Panorama with "gamode show" gamode add [device] example gamode add 1920 1080 32 0 Check that your Reduced DVI Timings is turned off. "gaoption show" <== check that Reduced DVI Timings...... Off I think from your config snippet that you are running the correct drivers but may simply have to add that monitor to the parameters file. This bit from the snap readme.txt file :- If SciTech SNAP Graphics does not correctly boot on your system, you can easily switch back to the GENGRADD drivers to boot your system to a workable state again. To revert to GENGRADD, do the following: 1. Boot to an Alt-F1/F2 command prompt mode 2. Edit CONFIG.SYS file and change C1=SDDGRADD to C1=GENGRADD 3. Delete or rename the x:\os2\svgadata.pmi file 4. Reboot your system. If that fails you will need to revert to VGA mode and reinstall your prior display drivers. NOTE: Even if you use GENGRADD, you should still be able to run the SNAP command line utilities, provided that you didn't remove any of the SNAP files or the DEVICE=X:\OS2\SDDHELP.SYS line from your CONFIG.SYS. tells me that C1=SDDGRADD is ok anyway. I can dig out an old IBM laptop with OS/2 on it from my 'storeroom' and check on that, I think I used the Panorama drivers on that one. Thanks to you and Roderick, but in fact I didn't read your responses until after I found the "setup gen" suggestion on a web site. Until I had solved the problem my e-mail was just about unreadable. In fact I was thinking of subscribing to os2genau from my Windows laptop in order to read responses. > Found a "Acer KA240HQ 23.6 LCD Monitor" on Officeworks but they dont > actually state the pixel's apart from "The monitor has a Full HD > resolution". Further searching tells me it is 1920 x 1080. I cant see > a KA240HQ on Officeworks or the acer.com website. The "Screen" utility now shows six available resolutions (obtained via DDC). I've now set it to 1280x1024, which is tolerable except that the displayed characters are a bit too wide. (And some non-resizable windows are far too wide!) I might try 1600x1200 or 1920x1440 later, but for now at least I have something that works. The documentation with the monitor does say 1920x1080, but it looks as if my display adaptor (Intel Eaglelake Graphics) doesn't support that. In fact the adaptor seems to be biased towards 4x3 aspect ratios. > "setup gen" from the x:\snap\disk directory. I assume here it would > be C:\Panorama\disk, if not try a simple "dir/s setup*" I did find the setup.cmd, but the README left it unclear as to whether that was the right thing to run. Anyway, you were right. > Check your current resolutions after installing Panorama with > "gamode show" > gamode add [device] > example gamode add 1920 1080 32 0 > Check that your Reduced DVI Timings is turned off. > "gaoption show" <== check that Reduced DVI Timings...... There's no gamode or gaoption on my system, but something called PanoUtil seems to do a similar job. I'm not sure that it's safe to specify a mode that's not included in the display adaptor modes, but I should try it some time. -- Peter Moylan peter at pmoylan.org http://www.pmoylan.org A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text.
