In Today's Issue: ================= Feature o A change of view on data ------------------------------------------------------------ Feature ------------------------------------------------------------ A change of view on data Within your company, you are most likely faced with complex IT environments -- a number of different data sources, residing in various computer systems, in different locations, and of multiple data types. When it's time to pull together your data, what do you do? Maybe you have been acquainted with the rip and replace strategy -- basically, scrapping everything you have and starting anew with a centralized system. This time, you promise to keep track of every piece of data and make sure all information is compliant. The investment, as well as the risk, in creating this system could be high, since it lacks flexibility for future technological advancements and changes. IBM's announcement of its new software, DB2 Information Integrator, incorporates an alternative approach: federated data management. This functionality is based upon IBM's Xperanto project, a research and development effort focused on addressing evolving data management needs. The capabilities reduce the need for your organization to move data or replace current IT infrastructure. Instead of needing a central storage, DB2 Information Integrator offers the broadest support for open standards. It allows businesses to access and integrate both structured and unstructured information, as if it were stored in one place, including XML, e-mail, multi-media, Web Services, Life Sciences, and competitive data sources such as Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server databases. The key here is that it's not in one place, yet the customer is presented his/her data in a consolidated view. In addition, DB2 Information Integrator is tightly integrated with IBM's WebSphere Business Integration software, providing customers with the most comprehensive business integration infrastructure in the industry. Having a single view of disparate data could change your own view of data -- less frustration, more useful consolidation. More on DB2 Information Integrator.
