In Today's Issue: ================= Feature o The software side of transformation ------------------------------------------------------------ Feature ------------------------------------------------------------ The software side of transformation The task. Overwhelmed by its own complexity and faced with possible demise, IBM struggled to learn the lessons it needed to survive. Transformation was the key. And it needed it quickly. The move. IBM went from a collection of separate business units to an agile, integrated enterprise, focused on the customer. Easier to get things done. Easier to add value. Easier to get to know. By leveraging its own software, hardware, and services, IBM transformed the way it did business. The software solution. Integration became the software calling. How could separate entities function together? IBM needed the glue, connecting its disparate applications. Deciding to deploy critical middleware components, it used the WebSphere product line (Application Server, MQ, and Commerce) and DB2 Universal Database offerings. IBM's middleware products allowed the company to easily and cost-effectively integrate its e-business applications with third-party solutions like Siebel and SAP. Other key software building blocks of IBM's infrastructure include Lotus Domino and Notes and the full suite of Tivoli management products. New technologies such as Web services and Business Process Integration components (including those obtained through IBM's acquisition of CrossWorlds) are also being leveraged. Read more details of IBM's transformation story in its IDC e-business case study, IBM: Business Transformation Through End-to-End Integration. http://isource.ibm.com/cgi-bin/goto?on=swnl11/transform ---------------------------------------------------------------- Top Stories ---------------------------------------------------------------- Rational Software could make fifth software brand Rational Software and IBM have entered into a definitive agreement for IBM to acquire the equity of Rational. Rational is a software development platform that improves the speed, quality, and predictability of software projects. IBM intends to merge Rational's business operations and employees into the IBM Software Group as a new division and fifth brand, joining WebSphere, Lotus, Tivoli, and DB2 Data Management Software. http://isource.ibm.com/cgi-bin/goto?on=swnl11/five World's first 10 terabyte TPC-H benchmark result DB2, the most scalable database, combined with the most scalable Unix servers reaches a new milestone in enterprise data warehousing. This benchmark is the largest defined scale-factor for the industry's most important Business Intelligence/Data Warehouse benchmark. It represents a complex query performance on a very large database. http://isource.ibm.com/cgi-bin/goto?on=swnl11/first Move2Lotus program makes strides The "Move2Lotus" program surpasses its milestone as it continues to help over 200 customers move to Lotus Domino. Now it has expanded to include tools and technology to help customers migrate to IBM Lotus Domino on Sun Microsystems Solaris*-based platforms. The total migration solution offers customers who are currently using competitive messaging and collaborative products, including Microsoft Exchange* and Novell Groupwise*, on Wintel hardware competitive discounts for migrating to Lotus Domino. http://isource.ibm.com/cgi-bin/goto?on=swnl11/move ---------------------------------------------------------------- Developers ---------------------------------------------------------------- Applying the state pattern to portlets Using the state pattern in portlet programming avoids complex control logic in each portlet. Instead, the state pattern allows for the viewing of applications as a collection of portlet actions and states. Even while moving between portlet modes, the state is always remembered. http://isource.ibm.com/cgi-bin/goto?on=swnl11/state Create an online store quickly with WebSphere Commerce This tutorial guides one through the creation of a B2B store using the store samples and store services tools in WebSphere Commerce 5.4. The integrated software components within Commerce helps build, maintain, and manage stores on the Web -- from integrated contract management, to requisition lists, or from request for quote (RFQ) management tools to available-to- purchase capabilities. http://isource.ibm.com/cgi-bin/goto?on=swnl11/store Tivoli Identity Manager component structure explained Here are some tips for designing and implementing a distributed, highly available identity management system. The paper briefly looks at each component of Tivoli Identity Manager and describes how it logically relates to the other components and what other products are required for it to function. http://isource.ibm.com/cgi-bin/goto?on=swnl11/identity ---------------------------------------------------------------- Innovations ---------------------------------------------------------------- Pervasive Computing strategy listens to new software New software products and tools will make it easier for developers to build and manage voice portals, as well as extend enterprise applications, such as mobile databases, to new devices. It enables mobile workers to more easily access information from multiple voice applications, using a single telephone number. http://isource.ibm.com/cgi-bin/goto?on=swnl11/voice Get in the game: Web services open the future IBM's role is simple: to enable, dynamic e-business using open Internet standards so that one gains the highest level of business advantage. Be able to connect existing systems and choose best-of-breed hardware and software going forward. Learn more about the game plan and listen in on the PeP talk. http://isource.ibm.com/cgi-bin/goto?on=swnl11/web Freedom of choice: IBM wireless software and open standards The future growth of the e-business on demand marketplace depends on open standards. As the Internet and the business IT infrastructure keep growing, and as the number of devices to be connected continue to multiply, their integration is a critical need. Defined are some of the major standards efforts that help drive future growth. http://isource.ibm.com/cgi-bin/goto?on=swnl11/open ---------------------------------------------------------------- Success Stories ---------------------------------------------------------------- State of Michigan sets up a new office The State of Michigan now provides a coherent, easy-to-use platform, called the e-Michigan Office. The portal solution, www.michigan.gov, allows users to create a personalized profile and features both e-commerce and Web-based self-service transactional services. http://isource.ibm.com/cgi-bin/goto?on=swnl11/michigan Merck gains a healthy system To promote better information sharing among its researchers and reduce costs, Merck KGaA turned to IBM Business Partner Creon*Lab*Control to create a customized laboratory information system (LIMS). Developed with WebSphere Studio Application Developer, the LIMS, uses WebSphere Application Server to integrate the researchers' desktop systems with the laboratory equipment and backend information management and ERP systems. http://isource.ibm.com/cgi-bin/goto?on=swnl11/merck Prudential ensures the future Prudential chose IBM to provide the common IT infrastructure for its Java* applications, employing WebSphere Application Server, WebSphere MQ, DB2, Lotus Sametime, and RS/6000s. Benefits include faster deployment of new applications, self-service applications, savings estimates exceeding three times the investment, convenient communication and collaboration, a secure infrastructure, and a clearinghouse for best practices. http://isource.ibm.com/cgi-bin/goto?on=swnl11/future ---------------------------------------------------------------- Event Listing ---------------------------------------------------------------- Access various IBM e-classes Virtual classroom with hands-on labs and live instruction.
