Exciting changes have taken place in Information Management this past month!

The most notable one is our recent announcement of a definitive agreement to acquire Cognos Incorporated, a leading provider of business intelligence (BI) and performance management software. This acquisition advances IBM's cross-company Information on Demand initiative, aimed at capturing the growing market opportunity for enabling clients to use information as a competitive and strategic business asset. IBM has been a long-standing provider of business intelligence solutions, dating back to the early days of data warehousing, query and report writing and analysis.

Cognos products are used to analyze and interpret vast quantities of data, such as, customer demographics, product purchase histories, cross-sales, service calls, on-line transactions, turning this information into insight and developing conclusive, fact-based strategies to gain a competitive edge. In addition, Cognos provides the only complete, integrated, open standards-based SOA platform for turning data into usable information for business intelligence and performance management. This additional set of capabilities significantly enhances the Information on Demand customer value. We are planning some exciting activities to commensurate the expected close and Information on Demand evolution.

		Best-In-Class Data Server Solutions Take Home IOD Innovation Awards Data Server customers were honored for their top innovations involving pureXML, IDS, Dynamic Warehousing and SOA at the 2007 IOD Conference. Best DB2 pureXML Solution award was given to the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. The tax department used DB2 9 to implement its FedState 1120 project, also known as Corporation Tax e-file. The IBM DB2 solution with pureXML allowed the tax department to integrate its information onto a centralized SOA-based platform, minimizing IT costs and improving the handling and storage of tax records. Aurora Healthcare, a non-profit Wisconsin healthcare provider, shone in the area of Best SOA Integration of DB2 for z/OS. With system z, Aurora has been able to keep company infrastructure simple, storing information in a centralized, easily accessible location consolidating the information held in 1,000 underlying systems. Wachovia, the largest financial holding company in the US, won an Innovation Award for the Best SOA Integration of IMS. The reliability of IMS Connect has made it possible for Wachovia to access all core business applications including retail banking, customer information and customer relationship on the IMS system. Bernie O’Connor was recognized as Data Server Professional of the Year.
