A new batch of five original commentaries in Issue #10 of the IACT
Quarterly Newsletter has been posted. Highlights include operating
systems, Internet "munchies" and creative solutions & fixes: 


* "FreeBSD for everyone / FreeBSD alla portata di tutti"
- Imagine a box with DOS & Windows, then rearrange it into a trio of PCs
connected by OS/2 Warp. But your Warped network doesn't really rock 'n'
roll until you open it up to one more performer-- not Linux, but FreeBSD.


* "A Cure for the Internet Munchies"
- If e-commerce overtakes the WWW, then what will happen to community
activities like comp. user groups and homepage publishing, and how will we
value and appreciate our personal ideas and work?


* "The First, Last & Only Really Big Software Fix"
- How do we find programs that will give us high performance without
costly upgrades and bugs? Maybe "leanware" is the answer, available for a
choice of operating environments e.g. Linux, DOS and OS/2.


* "Alternative Keyboards"
- Repetitive Strain Injury has sparked interest in alternative keyboards
and input devices. Other keyboards are designed for dual language support.


* "Setting Standards for Document Formats
- Can open standards such as SGML replace proprietary application formats?
If we do find a great document standard, how will the vendors comply with
it?
