PHILADELPHIA OS/2 USER GROUP . http://www.phillyos2.org The Philadelphia OS/2 User Group invites all interested computer users to attend the June monthly meeting: . WEDNESDAY, JUNE 27, 2001 7:00 - 10:00 PM . The Episcopal Academy, 376 N. Latches Lane, Merion, PA *** JUNE 27th FEATURE PRESENTATION *** -- ATM Networking for OS/2 - Part 2 -- -- LVM/JFS Demonstration -- Last month, OS/2 member Vadim Kavalerov presented a Part 1 review of ATM networking, and how TCP/IP can be implemented over ATM on OS/2, including the use of optical fiber. This month, in Part 2, Vadim will take a look at ATM service classes and QoS (quality of service). ATM traffic multiplexing and traffic contracts will be explained, and he will also discuss the reasons why these features present advantages of ATM cell multiplexing over packet-switching networking technologies such as Ethernet or IP over SONET. Native ATM application development paths will also be outlined. As a special added feature, Vadim will do a live demonstration of installation of IBM's Logical Volume Manager (LVM) and Journaling File System (JFS) features, which are still rather mysterious unknowns to most of our members. LVM and JFS are major new features introduced with IBM Warp Server for e-Business (WSeB) in 1999, and are also now included with IBM's MCP and ACP, as well as Serenity's eComStation (eCS). Thus these components of high performance OS/2 storage systems are now available to all OS/2 users at reasonably low cost. Installation of OS/2 on LVM-managed disk partitions are somewhat different from doing it with the familiar FDISK tool. Vadim will do a live walk through the initial steps of a WSeB installation, and show basic ways of using LVM. JFS will also be explained and demonstrated, as well. So please try not to miss this opportunity to learn about these new major OS/2 features. In Barry Mann's REXX Section tutorial this month, everything comes together when we cover the REXXUTIL functions. These are REXX functions specific to the OS/2 platform. We will cover file system commands (ADD, DELETE, Directory Search, etc.), Workplace Shell object manipulation and Extended Attributes. With these tools on your belt, you'll be able to write an endless stream of useful utilities to install, uninstall, backup, search, replace, and on and on. Other agenda items include U/G business matters, OS/2 news, Q&A session, new releases & raffles. Free light refreshments. Philadelphia OS/2 meetings are open and free for OS/2 users, their guests and others interested in learning about OS/2 and associated technologies. .
