For anyone interested in the ability to play multiple multimedia formats
with OS/2 Warp, I'd like to draw your attention to a great little utility
called QuickView for DOS.

Yes, that's right -- DOS!  (Which means it runs beautifully under OS/2
Warp, of course.)

You can get QuickView for DOS (shareware evaluation copy) by visiting:

and also find out more about licensing QuickView source code.  (Perhaps
someone would like to develop a native player and/or plug-in?  :-))

QuickView runs in a full screen DOS session, and for best results you'll
need to make sure you have an audio adapter which supports
SoundBlaster-type audio in DOS sessions.  You should also follow the
instructions in the QuickView documentation to change the DOS session's
settings.

Here's a list of the multimedia formats supported by QuickView for DOS:

Video formats:

.AVI: Sound can be either PCM, Microsoft ADPCM, IMA ADPCM, A-law, u-law,
GSM 6.10 and Audio MPEG incl. MP3.
.MOV: Sound can be "raw", "twos", A-law, u-law, IMA ADPCM or GSM 6.10.

Supported video codecs for AVI and MOV:

 CLJR [cljr] (24 bit)

VideoCDs and CD-i (partly) are supported using the -VCD command.

uncompressed: 1, 4, 8, 16 and 24 color bits
RLE compressed: 4 and 8 color bits
including OS/2 bitmaps
furthermore all kindred formats:
.RLE, .DIB, .BGA, .VGA, .RLE, .RL4, .RL8

.GIF:1-8 color bits, GIF 87a and GIF 89a extensions

It looks like QuickView's authors are tracking the OpenDivX code pretty
closely, so perhaps someday we'll have a DOS DVD player.  :-)
