PHILADELPHIA OS/2 USER GROUP . http://www.phillyos2.org The Philadelphia OS/2 User Group invites all interested computer users to attend the November monthly meeting: . WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 2001 7:00 - 10:00 PM . The Episcopal Academy, 376 N. Latches Lane, Merion, PA . *** NOVEMBER 28th FEATURE PRESENTATION *** . -- Manipulating & Organizing Scanned Material -- During the past year or two, greatly reduced prices for scanners have made them most affordable. And consequently, scanners have become very popular products in the small business and consumer markets, for OS/2 as well as Windows platforms. In the last 5 years, Philadelphia OS/2 UG member Vadim Kavalerov has scanned tens of thousands of pages, exclusively on OS/2. He has accumulated several applications proved useful for different aspects of scanning, preprocessing and organizing images, mostly black-and-white text documents. At the November meeting, Vadim will demonstrate the following applications using an HP6350 color scanner: CopyShop: An easy-to-use control panel for a scanner, printer, and fax software (FaxWorks). Applause: A very fast viewer. ReView: A document manager with built-in document database. It's most valuable in editing large multi-page documents. JView: An amazing shareware image editing software that has a powerful REXX API that lets you write simple programs for automating routine repetitive tasks. ColorWorks: A heavy-weight image processor, mostly useful for advanced tasks on color images. BatchOCR: Can convert hundreds of pages of scanned text into text documents completely automatically that is useful for storing them into a database. Some of the above applications, despite being useful and of good quality, have been abandoned by their publishers. STI is one of the few remaining strongholds of OS/2 scanning software. Visit STI's website to view their products: http://www.stiscan.com. Larry Lavins will also discuss the use of PMSANE/SANE for use with his UMAX Astra 1220S SCSI scanner. Other agenda items, as time permits, include U/G business items, OS/2 news, Q&A session, new releases and raffles. The usual free refreshments will also be available. Mark the date and time: Wednesday, November 28th, at 7:00pm. OS/2 meetings are open and free for OS/2 users, their guests and others interested in learning about OS/2 and associated technologies. We have a very full agenda, so also please try to be on time promptly by 7:00pm.
