From: announce.openwatcom-admin at list.scitechsoft.com Open Watcom C/C++ and FORTRAN 1.0 is here! ========================================== What is Open Watcom? -------------------- Open Watcom is an effort to take the commercial Sybase Watcom compilers, and turn them into an Open Source Project. When Sybase realised that the Watcom C/C++ and FORTRAN compilers were no longer commercially viable, they searched around to find a solution for their existing customers. SciTech Software, a long time user of Watcom compiler products contacted Sybase about turning the compilers into an Open Source project, and hence the Open Watcom Project was born. The Open Watcom products are so far the first and only proprietary compilers to be Open Sourced. With more than a million lines of source code the Watcom products represent one of the largest pools of proprietary source code ever released under an Open Source license. Sybase has released the code under an Open Source license that complies with the Open Source Definition, published by the Open Source Initiative (http://www.opensource.org). The Sybase Public License used by the Open Watcom project can be viewed online here: http://www.openwatcom.org/license_info/open_watcom_lic.html Multiple Platforms In A Single Package! --------------------------------------- Open Watcom C/C++ and FORTRAN supports a wide range of host and target platforms including Windows 95/98/Me, Windows NT/2000/XP, OS/2, extended DOS and Novell Netware. This impressive platform support is amplified by the powerful cross-platform capabilities of the IDE and tools, which enable building applications for a wide range of target environments from any of the host systems. For example, from Windows XP you can build and debug Windows 98, 32-bit DOS and 32-bit OS/2 applications, in addition to Windows XP applications. This extensive cross-platform support helps you to exploit the capabilities of your host platform. Powerful remote debugging capabilities! --------------------------------------- The Open Watcom C/C++ and FORTRAN compilers support powerful remote debugging capabilities right out of the box. Support is included for remote debugging over the serial port, parallel port, TCP/IP for all supported platforms (including DOS!). There are also remote debugging layers for Novell Netware networks (IPX and NetBIOS) as well as remote debugging within virtual DOS machines and more. The best feature of the Open Watcom remote debugging support is the ability to cross compile and debug any target platform from any host platform! You can if you want develop and debug Win32 applications from OS/2 or DOS, and when the Linux port is complete you will be able to build and debug Win32 applications from Linux! Free OS/2 and Windows SDK's included! ------------------------------------- One of the biggest missing links with the Open Watcom C/C++ and FORTRAN compilers is the lack of SDK headers and libraries for OS/2 and Windows. Thanks to the efforts of some of our Open Watcom team members, we now have fairly complete SDK headers and libraries for OS/2, Win16 and Win32! The Win32 SDK headers and libraries are actually based heavily on the w32api project developed and maintained by the MinGW compiler folks. Thanks to these efforts we now have a reasonably complete set of Open Source OS/2, Win16 and Win32 headers and libraries for use with Open Watcom! Please feel free to contribute updates and additions to these SDK projects if you find things are missing or incorrect. Free DOS extenders included! ---------------------------- Open Watcom C/C++ and FORTRAN includes a number of royalty free and Open Source DOS extenders right out of the box. Thanks to Tenberry Software's gracious donation, the original DOS/4GW DOS extender from Watcom C/C++ and FORTRAN is included royalty free with the Open Watcom compilers. Also included is the now free CauseWay DOS extender developed by Michael Devore. Both binaries are included as well as complete source code in the source archives. Finally we have also included the free PMODE/W and DOS/32A DOS extenders as part of the package. Where can I get Open Watcom? ---------------------------- The Open Watcom C/C++ and FORTRAN compilers are freely available in both binary and source code form from the official Open Watcom web site. You can download the files directly from the web site, or if you prefer you can purchase the Open Watcom C/C++ and FORTRAN official CD-ROM and help support the Open Watcom effort! For more information on getting Open Watcom, see: http://www.openwatcom.org/download/download_licenses.html Want to Join the Team? ---------------------- Now that the Open Watcom source code is freely available, anyone can join the Open Watcom development team. If you would like to get started developing and contributing to the Open Watcom project, please join the Open Watcom community by visting: http://www.openwatcom.org Regards, --- Kendall Bennett Chief Executive Officer SciTech Software, Inc.
