Date: Tue, 20 Jan 2004 18:14:30 -0500 From: "Mark Dodel" Subject: [VOICENWS] Net: Analyzing the causes with F/X Communications From: "Walter F. Metcalf" In November 7, 2003, this mail list carried a post entitled "InJoy Firewall and Dialer release illegal use of Dynamic Windows" which originally was posted in OS2WORLD.COM In the interest of fairness I am posting of the following information to update the situation. First, the original post in OS2WORLD.COM appears to have been removed. Second, Eugene Gorbunoff, editor of ecomstation.ru, who earlier posted the same article, has apologized for doing so in the following post, dated 14 January 2004. Analyzing the causes with F/X Communications ------------------------------------------------------------ Some months ago the reputation of the company F/X Communications was severely damaged by a fired developer. The developer was fired almost a year ago and several reliable witnesses have since then rejected his story. In spite of the damage, F/X Communications continues its business and they have initiated a law-suit in the U.S against the developer. F/X Communications has been working on the OS/2 market for more than 8 years and continues to provide the OS/2 community with quality software and support. The reputation of F/X may be confirmed by its developers, also actual russian developers, and many F/X business partners and customers. The circumstances however show that work over the Internet requires excessive responsibility from both sides (both employer and employee). F/X Communications is interested in analyzing the causes of the problems and together with its employees it has listed some of the possible reasons why a normal work flow hasn't always been possible. These problems are based on actual examples and apply to all countries wherever you work from: * Developers disappearing for long periods, sometimes even without notifying the company. Examples include military service, illness, problems in the family and even jail. * Slow and sometimes very unreliable (dial-up) Internet access combined with constant loss of electricity (especially in ex-USSR countries). * A different mentality and sometimes a very different work-ethics. * Self-taught programmers that aren't always capable of working professionally. * Difficulties with managing employees, since the boss can't see what employees are actually doing. * Excuses about family, like the famous "sick grandmother". * Poor hardware situations and difficulties with sending test equipment back and forth. * Poor English capabilities and inability or unwillingness to document the work. * Lack of team-spirit, if the developers and the manager can never meet in person. * More... Please, be careful with taking a job over the Internet if you expect such problems to happen (this relates to work for any company). One might think that part of these problems can't be controlled by the developer and use that as an excuse, but real-world business doesn't care about that and such problems shouldn't be allowed to continue forever. Developers should work actively to solve such problems or it would be better to find a local job. Eugene Gorbunoff (the editor of eComStation.Ru) apologizes for posting self-willed conclusions of the original message based on declarations of one side only.
