Metcalf" The VOICE board of directors has been looking at ways in which we could expand VOICE's services to OS/2 and eComStation users. As you may be aware, we've been publishing a German edition of the Newsletter for several years. We've noticed there is a lot of excellent work being done on OS/2 and eComStation by our Russian-speaking colleagues. Both the Russian site, ecomstation.ru, and the Ukrainian site, kiev.ua, or example, have lively discussions in their forums on a variety of topics. In addition several excellent pieces of software have come from these areas. Two examples are WarpVision and OpenSSH. In spite of some translation work on the Russian and Ukranian sites, the Russian OS/2-eCS community is largely separated from the German- and English-speaking community by language. So it seemed natural to look into expanding the VOICE Newsletter (VNL) by adding a Russian edition, just as was done with the German edition a few years ago. Christian Hennecke, editor-in-chief of the VNL, and I have already posted messages on the ecomstation.ru site (URL: ) and have received some positive response. Not only would this make everything the English and German writers available in Russian, Russia eCS-OS/2 users would be able to submit articles written in their native language, have them translated into English and German and published in both of those editions. However, to make the project work, we need TRANSLATORS. Christian says that we will need at least 3 to 4 *really* dedicated and reliable people and a total of 6-10 later on to avoid burnout." Two people have already responded, offering to help with translating from English to Russian. As you can see, we will need several more volunteers to make this project work. If you would like to see a Russian edition of the VOICE Newsletter, and are fluent in Russian and in either German or English, please contact either Christian at christian.henneckeDESPAM at ruhr-uni-bochum.de or myself at the address below. You can get more information on what's involved in helping to publish the Newsletter at For your information, I am reproducing below the message that Christian posted to the ecomstation.ru news forum: ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ I haven't been able to deal with this over the past week, but I'm going to comment a bit. I'm also going to add that as a comment to your news message. Work on the Newsletter is organized via a closed mailing list (i.e. you can't post there without me having subscribed you to it, so there's no spam) and a web page for assigning tasks, so everybody can see what's to do, who is doing what, and what the current status is for each article. We are using PPWizard to generate certain parts of the pages, e.g. header, footer, author info, and references. The process for each article is as follows: first, the original submitted article is edited and proof-read, then it gets translated by one person and proof-read by another. That proof-read version is again checked in case anything bad has happened to formatting, and used to build the final HTML file (and the HTML that is used to convert to IPF). Much of this is explained in a bit more detail at http://www.os2voice.org/newsletter_faq.html. So to get a Russian version up and running, somebody would first have to translate the task assignment web page, the files that are included in each version of the Newsletter, and the PPWizard stuff (most language-dependent stuff is included in a single file). Finally, we should at least have Russian versions of the main Newsletter page and the master index on the VOICE home page (maybe called "http://ru.os2voice.org"). Most of these can be generated automatically by PPWizard, but the templates have to be written once. Finally, a word on the personnel. To keep that thing going without anyone being forced on the road of burn-out, each person on the team shouldn't work on more than two articles per issue (e.g. one translation and one proof-reading). And since I am not capable of reading Russian, someone else would have to actually build and package the issue. This person should also take the position of coordinator for the Russian translation team. If there is enough interest from you guys (and gals), I'll also try to find people who are capable of translating Russian to German and vice versa.
