Date: Sun, 24 Apr 2005 12:08:27 -0300 From: madodel at ptdprolog.net Subject: [VOICENWS] Net: OS2 World: Petition making OS/2 Open Source ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eComStation News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: kimhDESPAM at DESPAMos2world.com It is known that OS/2 isn't well supported by companies that make software or by individual developers, and OS/2 faces a high possibility of being replaced from the market. That's why we are making this petition to IBM so the OS/2 Technology can be freely distributed and developed around the world. We understand that making OS/2 Open source will be beneficial for the IBM customers knowing also the problems that IBM can face with the private source code but also offering a solution with the OS/2 Developer community. Making OS/2 Open Source will benefit all IBM customers that had invested on this OS. Customer that are willing to continue using OS/2 will get the benefit to have an open OS that will be continuos developed by individual developers and/or software companies, their ownership fees will decrease and they will have the security to have use an OS that is going to stay for a longer time in the market (following the Linux example). Also customer that are willing to migrate to other platforms will find beneficial to have OS/2 open source, with that it will be easier to migrate their programs or make an OS/2 interpreter or emulator for the transition. We know that IBM faces a problem of making OS/2 Open Source because of the private source from third companies. What we ask to IBM is to release as much of the source that can be possible and list the OS/2 components that need an Open Source replacement. With a list of components that need to be replaced companies interested on OS/2 or individual developers can create Open Source software to fill this "holes" in the OS. IBM will also find beneficial the open source of OS/2. The OS/2 Community can freely develop Open Source software just like it had been happening to Linux. IBM can take advantage of this and have less expenses on the mantaince, and getting improvements for developers around the world. Conclusions IBM is preaching and supporting on this days the use of open standards and says that the benefits of Open Source software are many. IBM understand that open source software are directly beneficial to the customers, that's why IBM is supporting a 110% Linux. For either customer that want to keep OS/2 and from those who are thinking to migrate from it, making OS/2 Open Source will be a fine strategy. We also have a OS/2 community of developers that had made several open source software for OS/2 and they are also willing to stay in this platforms.
