For those interested, there is currently a thread running on the 
ecs-technical yahoogroups list related to MFC in cluding the Brother (in 
our case MFC620CN however the network side is the same across the models 
apparently). (Subject is "3in1 Printers and eCS?")

Also of note are these devices ability to (without computer connection) to
scan and e-mail a graphic direct from the machine in either PDF or  JPG
format.
