From Mark Dodel madodel at ptdprolog.net First some information about this list: FYI, The VOICE News list has been in existence since about June 1997 (The first message I have in my archive was dated 06/09/1997, from Judy McDermott about IRC servers for VOICE meetings). According to my count we have sent almost 4,900 announcements since then. The VOICE News list is now at 775 subscribers. That is down just a bit from its high over the past couple years of around 810, but about the same as its been for the past year. ----- Now a bit about submitting news items to the list. Please send all submissions to submit at os2voice.org and not to a moderator's personal email addresses. Sending it to the submit address guarantees that the message will get to the correct place and can be handled by any of the list moderators. To make things as clear to readers as possible we ask that the message subject include the full name of a software application (if appropriate), as well as the version the announcement is about. An example of the subject layout for software announcements is as follows: SW: [Name of Program] [Version] - [Comments] In addition we try to use standard prefixes for all subjects as follows: Admin - News list related announcements. eCS - Related directly to Serenity System's eComStation version of OS/2. Event - A user group meeting, show or IRC event. HW - Hardware announcement. Job - An OS/2 related employment opportunity. Mag - Magazine. Net - Post is regarding a web site or news article. OT - Off topic for this list. This is extremely rare, but it has happened. SW - Software announcement. VOICE - VOICE related announcement. Misc - Something that doesn't fit in the above groupings. Any posts sent to the list need to include a short description of the product, service or news item; a list of any updates/changes in the new version if appropriate; and a URL for more information as well as a URL for any download if necessary. If the item is software found on Hobbes, it is helpful to include its current location as well as a generalized search URL - http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/cgi-bin/h-search?key=SOMETHINGUSEFUL.HERE will help find it even if it is moved from the \incoming directory. If you have a list of items in your post (eg, features or fixes for a new release of software), please start each item in the list with a blank space. Otherwise the formatting may get messed up when the post is forwarded to the list. You can put a list delimiter like a "-" or a "#" if you like, but the space is the most important character to start a list item with. And a big thanks for not sending any HTML formatted messages to the list. These are routed to a SPAM folder upon receipt, so if someone has sent any in the past, I may have missed it, but I don't recall ever receiving one. I do browse the SPAM subjects before deleting them, but the volume is staggering on some days. Text messages only please. :-) And please note that the VOICE News list strips all attachments, so there is no chance of getting a virus here. Any comments or suggestions about the list or announcements to the list are appreciated, but please send them to feedback at os2voice.org so they get to the right place. That's it for now. Thanks for your time and cooperation. Mark 9th November 2004
