OS/2 SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP . PHILADELPHIA AREA COMPUTER SOCIETY . http://www.phillyos2.org The OS/2 SIG of the Philadelphia Area Computer Society invites all interested computer users to attend the November meeting: . WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 2000 7:00 - 10:00 PM . The Episcopal Academy, 376 N. Latches Lane, Merion, PA *** NOVEMBER 15th FEATURE PRESENTATION *** -- INTRODUCTION TO REXX PROGRAMMING -- WHAT REXX CAN DO FOR YOU At the November 15th meeting, SIG member Barry Mann will conduct a presentation/demo of REXX, a subject of continuing interest by many of our members. The REXX programming language, now celebrating its 20th birthday, is another gem included with OS/2. REXX can be used in a variety of ways, ranging from simple batch-type files to programming full GUI applications. In his presentation, Barry will introduce the REXX language and cover the basics, such as the syntax, statements and style. Then he will walk us through some simple programs that can be used to build and destroy desktop objects; and to collect various files into archives for subsequent distribution. These are the same "textbook" techniques used by numerous commercial products to install and uninstall their programs. Finally, he will demo "Jukebox," a multi-threaded GUI application coded in REXX. "Jukebox" will show how a single console, serving multiple broadcast stations, might exercise simultaneous control of many players, each of which has a number of selections. Attendees will leave with a basic knowledge of REXX programming and a group of REXX program shells that may be easily customized for their own needs. Other agenda items include SIG business matters, OS/2 news, new software releases, Q&A session & raffles. An OS/2 system will be on hand for demos of OS/2, Java, Internet, etc. as time permits. Free light refreshments will be available. Mark the date and time: Wednesday, November 15th, at 7:00pm, to hear about all the new and exciting developments, or if you have questions about OS/2 Warp and Java. OS/2 SIG meetings are open and free for OS/2 users, their guests and all others interested in learning about OS/2 and associated Java technology.
