The first release of GenINI, a pair of programs to back up OS/2 INI files in human-readable form, and to restore an INI file from the human-readable form. GenINI is freeware and open source. This release is the first step in a longer-term project, aimed at giving the option of using text-based TNI files as a substitute for binary INI files. The reason for wanting to abandon the native INI format is that the native support has not been updated to take into account hardware developments, and that it now sometimes fails with an "out of memory" problem caused by the fact that the memory region designated by OS/2 as "shared memory" is too small for the demands being placed on it. Those demands are heavy each time you run software ported from Windows or Linux - both of which encourage the use of a large shared memory region - and unfortunately that is where much of our software is now coming from. The chances of fixing this problem are very low, unless and until IBM releases the source code for PMMERGE.DLL, so we need to work on workarounds. -- Peter Moylan http://www.pmoylan.org
