Chapter 2. About DB2 Universal Database

DB2 is a relational database management system that is web-enabled with Java support; scalable from single processors to symmetric multi-processors; and multimedia capable with image, audio, video, and text support. The DB2 products and components provided on your CD-ROM include: DB2 Enterprise Edition, DB2 Workgroup Edition, DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition, and DB2 Client Application Enabler. Features of each are listed below.

DB2 Workgroup Edition

DB2 Enterprise Edition
The DB2 Enterprise Edition includes all the functions provided in the DB2 Workgroup Edition, plus support for host connectivity providing users with access to DB2 databases residing on host systems such as MVS/ESA, OS/390, AS/400, VM, and VSE.

The DB2 Enterprise Edition supports unlimited LAN database access.

DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition
The DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition (formerly known as DDCS Multi-User Gateway) to provide access from clients on the network to DB2 databases residing on host systems such as MVS/ESA, OS/390, AS/400, VM, and VSE. DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition is available for the AIX, HP-UX, OS/2, Solaris, and Windows NT platforms.

DB2 Client Application Enabler
The DB2 Client Application Enabler enables a client workstation to access the DB2 server.

Note:DB2 Workgroup Edition, DB2 Enterprise Edition, DB2 Personal Edition, and DB2 Extended Enterprise Edition are commonly referred to as DB2 server throughout this book.
