--------------------------------------------------------------------------- The text of README.TXT, 8,093 bytes, 01/23/1998 at 14:23:00 follows: Package README - IDEDASD.EXE This pacckage supports IDE ATAPI CD-ROM drives and IDE Hard Disks that are between 4.3 GB and 8.2 GB. README.TXT CONTENTS: 1.0 PROBLEM THIS PACKAGE FIXES 2.0 SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS 3.0 INSTALLATION A) UPDATE A SYSTEM CURRENTLY INSTALLED B) NEW INSTALLATION OF WARP 4.0 PROBLEMS WITH LARGE PARTITIONS 5.0 PACKAGE CONTENTS 6.0 TRADEMARKS 1.0 Description of problem that this package fixes ------------------------------------------------------------ The advent of larger Enhanced IDE drives greater than 4.3 Gig has caused a problem with being able to install to these drives and FDISK reporting erroneous information. If your system BIOS has the ability to properly remap the parameters of these larger drives you can use new versions of IBM1S506.ADD and IBMIDECD.FLT, contained in this package, to support these new drives. Additionally, in some cases IDE ATAPI CD-ROM drives are not correctly identified (automatically detected), this package will correct this problem. 2.0 System Requirements ----------------------- These package supports Warp 3 and Warp 4 versions only. 3.0 Installation (2 versions: A or B) ---------------- A) If you currently have Warp installed and you only wish to update the IDE Disk or CD-ROM drivers, please follow this installation procedure and then skip to step "4.0 Problems with large partitions and booting". If you want to save the the existing (old) level of drivers in your system, change directory to the \os2\boot\ directory. To rename the drivers: (example with os2 in C: partition) c:\os2\boot\rename IBM1S506.ADD IBM1S506.ORG c:\os2\boot\rename IBMIDECD.FLT IBMIDECD.ORG (Note: These drivers are also on Diskette 1 of the install diskettes} Then use the Device Driver Install program in the OS/2 System Folder/System Setup Folder. (In Warp 4, Device Driver Install is found in the OS/2 System/System Setup/Install-Remove Folder). Point the Device Driver Install file dialogue to the directory that you have placed the new files in this package. You may skip step (B). B) If you are installing Warp for the 1st time and need to access a large hard file or CD-ROM drive, you will need to update the Warp install diskettes. Please use the following procedure: 1. Make a backup copy of your original Diskette 1 (this is the diskette that follows the OS/2 installation diskette). The new diskette copy, refered to as the "D1" diskette, will be modified by adding the new drivers and then will be used during the installation process. 2. If there is enough room on the new D1, copy the new drivers in this package (IBM1S506.ADD and IBMIDECD.FLT) onto this diskette. Please Note: these files are LARGER than the original files, so there may not be enough space on the diskette. Do not copy the file called IDEDASD.DDP. 3. If there is not enough room on D1, you will need to delete one of more files to make room for the new IBM1S506.ADD and IBMIDECD.FLT drivers. Try deleting the CDINST.EXE file first, this should free up about 16K. If more space is required, delete one or two XXXXXXXX.ADD's from D1 that are not required for installation. You must also "REM" (remove) the corresponding CONFIG.SYS statement in the CONFIG.SYS file on D1 or the OS/2 installation will not complete. ******************************************************** Note: The following files MUST NOT BE DELETED from D1: CLOCK01.SYS CLOCK02.SYS IBM1S506.ADD IBM1FLPY.ADD IBM2FLPY.ADD IBM2ADSK.ADD IBM2SCSI.ADD IBMINT13.I13 IBMKBD.SYS KBDBASE.SYS OS2LOGO OS2DASD.DMD PNP.SYS RESERVE.SYS RESOURCE.SYS SCREEN01.SYS SCREEN02.SYS XDFLOPPY.FLT *.SNP (all files with the extension of SNP) ******************************************************** For example, you may remove the AIC7770.ADD or AIC7870.ADD device drivers from D1. Choose the one that you do not have an adapter for in your system. This will free up an additional 40,000 bytes. Edit the CONFIG.SYS on D1 to remove the statement in the CONFIG.SYS file by adding "rem" before the statement. Example modifications to CONFIG.SYS, depending on the driver that you choose to remove: rem BASEDEV=AIC7770.ADD or rem BASEDEV=AIC7870.ADD 4. At this point, you should have copied the new drivers (IBM1S506.ADD & IBMIDECD.FLT) to D1 and, IF REQUIRED, removed unwanted CONFIG.SYS statements. Next, edit the CONFIG.SYS file on D1 to add the following statement: SET COPYFROMFLOPPY=1 5. Save the changes on your new D1 diskette. You have now completed the changes to the new D1 diskette. 6. Start the installation with the OS/2 Installation Diskette. 7. When you are prompted for Diskette 1 (D1), use the new diskette that you modified. 8. Proceed with the installation. 9. If during the installation process or when restarting your system, you lose connection to your hard disk or CD-ROM, make sure that the device driver statement is in the CONFIG.SYS file and the new versions of the IBM1S506.ADD and IBMIDECD.FLT device drivers, from this package, have been copied to the \OS2\BOOT\ directory. Use the date of the file to distinguish the newer version of IBM1S506.ADD and IBMIDECD.FLT. 4.0 Problems with large partitions and installation or booting -------------------------------------------------------------- There is a BIOS restriction that installable (startable) or bootable partitions must be contained within the first 1024 physical cylinders of the disk. FDISK does not enforce this limitation. If you have install or bootable failures this could be the problem. Use FDISK to reduce the size of your startable or bootable partition by sufficient MBytes. One way to calculate the correct size partitions to do the following: 1. Edit your CONFIG.SYS and add the following parameter to the BASEDEV=IBM1S506.ADD line as below: BASEDEV=IBM1S506.ADD /V 2. Save this change. 3. Reboot your system. 4. At initialization, record the far left hand column of number of the Geometry information under the ACT heading. Example: ACT Cyl 1027 Head 63 Sec 128 (head x sec) /2 = bootable partition must be contained within this boundary in MBytes (round down) This is the maximum size of a bootable partition in MBytes. Any bootable partition must also be contained from the beginning of the drive to this number of MBytes. A bootable partition may be smaller than the maximum size but still must be contained within this boundary. In this example the bootable partition must be contained in the first 4032 MBbytes of the disk and cannot exceed a single partition size of 4032 MBytes within this area. No bootable partition may extend beyond the first 4032 MBytes. Use this information when configuring your bootable partition with FDISK. 5.0 This package contains the following files: ---------------------------------------------- - README.TXT The file you are reading now - IBM1S506.ADD The IDE Disk Driver - IBMIDECD.FLT The Filter Driver for ATAPI CD-ROM drives - IDEUPDT.DDT The Device Driver Installation Profile ---------------- Note: ---------------- In the Warp Version 4 product, DMA was turned off as the default.
