CVS Add dialog box

The CVS Add "[file name]" command adds a file to the CVS repository, so it becomes available to other users working on the same project and so its evolution can be monitored by version control.

CVS requires you to keep all of the project module files it maintains inside one directory tree. Therefore, the file you want to add must be inside the project directory in your workspace before CVS can recognize and respond to the file.

Adding a file to a project module in the CVS repository is a three-stage process.

First, you must add it to the project directory so that CVS can access it. Do this before you add the file to the project:

  1. Copy or move the file into the project directory, using your usual file management method.

Tip: You can select Project|Project Properties and look at the Paths page to see the path of the active project.

Next, you must add the file to the project so that JBuilder can recognize it. Do this after you have moved the file into the project directory:

  1. Click the Add Files/Packages icon in the project tool bar.
  2. Browse to the file and select it.
  3. Click OK.
  4. Double-click on the file in the project pane or select it and press Enter to make it active in the content pane.

Once the file is inside the project directory and in the project, you must add it to the CVS module. You can do this in either of two ways:

The file addition must be committed, in order to tell CVS that it happened. JBuilder can do this automatically. As soon as the file is added, you will be prompted to commit the change and to provide a comment describing what you did.

If you are having trouble adding a file to CVS, remove the file from the project and start the process of adding it from the very first step above.
