Late Release Notes for XFree86/OS2 3.3.1

This file contains latest information that did not make it into the documentation by the time the version 3.3.1 was finalized.

• XFree86-3.3.1 is mainly a bug fix release for 3.3 which should fix about 140 problems found with the 3.3 version on various platforms. The fixes may or may not have an impact on XFree86/OS2 operation.
• Read the XOS2FAQ.HTM file which comes with this distribution. This file is HTML code and is best read with a Web reader, e.g. explore or netscape. It is located in the \XFree86\lib\X11\doc directory.
• A problem has been found shortly before the finalization of XFree86-3.3 with Matrox and other PCI-based boards supported by the SVGA server. If you have such a board, AND have installed certain OS/2 video drivers (notorious is the Matrox 2.11 driver obviously for both Millenium and Mystique), the X server will fail to probe the card correctly, and will fail entirely then. In this case, go through the standard xf86config dialogue and select your card as usual, but then edit the resulting \XFree86\lib\X11\XConfig file with an editor and add the following line in the "ServerFlags" section:

  	PCIProbe2
  

  This should fix the problem, and the server will work again.
• The X servers use a new DLL named SHM.DLL which implements experimental support for MIT-SHM. This might or might not work yet, but if so there should be a replacement for it in a future fix. If you upgrade from 3.3 by only updating the X server, get the file SHM.ZIP as a stub support, else your server won't run.
• There has been rumor that "the next version" will contain OpenGL support. While there might be some XFree86 servers for some platforms which can load a special OpenGL runtime module, the XFree86/OS2 servers won't. "The next version" again refers to XFree86-4.0, which will deal with such a runtime module.
• Xprt, Xnest, and Xvfb are broken in this version, and are not in the distribution (X331prt.zip, X331nest.zip, X331vfb.zip) even if some other docs claim the converse. These three programs are not too interesting anyway, IMHO.
• I've got several reports that FP26 caused problems with XFree86 in 3.2 and 3.2A (server won't start up, even when no other configuration problem exists, or crash intermittingly). Unfortunately, I can't reproduce the effect, but you should be warned if you use Warp 3 with FP26. Going back to an earlier FP (e.g. 17 or 22) or upgrading to Warp 4 has been reported to cure the problem.
• XF86SUP.SYS hasn't been changed since 3.2A, so if you upgrade from the 3.2A version, you don't need a reboot.
• As always, there is some goodie hidden in the distributed xinitrc.cmd file which is not in the standard XFree86-non-OS/2 distribution. This is usually some small, newly ported program. Last time it was some xloadimage program which could display GIF and JPG pictures on the background, this time it is something different. Use the provided xinitrc.cmd file, and watch what happens.
• Reporting bugs: There is the official XFree86/OS2 bugs page which is updated when new bugs are found (maybe even together with a workaround). Please consult this page before reporting a bug.

  Read the FAQ and ALL OTHER DOCUMENTS that are available before claiming something is a bug.

  Older versions, such as 3.2 and 3.2A are no longer supported, once XFree86-3.3.1 is available. XFree86-3.3 has been withdrawn, and you'll usually get the reply to try 3.3.1 first before claiming a bug in 3.3. I won't react to bug reports that refer to old code (unless you find out that XYZZY worked with an old version of XFree86, and now no longer does).
