Quick Beginnings

Step 1. Installing DB2 Products

This step describes how to install the DB2 products on Version 4.1.4 or later versions of the AIX operating system using the SMIT interface, and software bundles.
Note:This CD-ROM contains several products. Select the products you are licensed to install. Your Proof of Entitlement and License Information booklet identify the products for which you are licensed.

Installing Software Bundles Using SMIT

The following procedure shows how to install the DB2 products on Version 4.1.4 or later versions of the AIX operating system, using the software bundles feature. A software bundle is a collection of products and filesets. When you install a software bundle, every product and fileset in that bundle is installed.

  1. Log in as root.

  2. Insert the DB2 CD-ROM in the drive.

  3. Enter: smit easy_install_bundle to proceed directly to the automatic bundle processing application.

  4. Specify the installation device or directory for the installation media by pressing F4 to display a list. Select the CD-ROM drive in which you placed the DB2 CD-ROM, then press Enter.

  5. From the displayed menu, select the DB2-Connect-Enterprise software bundle.

  6. Press Enter to start the installation.

Messages will appear to indicate the status of the installation. Press Enter to continue, or F3 if you want to cancel.

Installing Products or Filesets Using SMIT

To install the DB2 Universal Database products on AIX Version 4.1.4 or later versions of the AIX operating system using SMIT, perform the following steps:

  1. Log in as root.

  2. Insert the DB2 CD-ROM in the drive.

  3. Enter: smit install_latest. The Software Installation and Maintenance menu appears.

  4. Specify the INPUT device/directory for software and press Enter. For example, if /cdrom is the CD-ROM mount directory, enter the following as the INPUT device:
       /cdrom/db2

  5. Press F4 to display a list of the software to install.
Note:For a detailed description of the software packages, refer to Appendix C. "Contents of the DB2 Products" for more information.

  6. Press F7 to mark one or more packages and filesets for installation.

  7. Press Enter to install the software.

  8. Press F10 to exit when the command displays OK.

After the installation is complete, the DB2 products will be installed in the /usr/lpp/db2_05_00 directory.

Installing the DB2 Product Library (Optional)

When you install DB2 products using the SMIT, the DB2 Product Library (HTML) is not automatically installed.

To install the DB2 Product Library, do the following:

  1. From the Install/Update Selectable Software (Custom Install) menu, select Install/Update From All Available Software.

  2. Enter the directory, where you want to install the DB2 Product Library, for the INPUT device/directory for software For example, if /cdrom is the CD-ROM mount directory, enter the following as the INPUT device:
       /cdrom/db2

  3. Select the DB2 Product Library (HTML) - locale option.

    note

The DB2 Product Library (HTML) option is listed as follows:
DB2 Product Library (HTML) - locale

where locale is the desired locale; for example, locale=Fr_FR for French in France with the IBM-850 code set.

  4. Run the following command to uncompress and un-tar the HTML files:
       /usr/lpp/db2_05_00/doc/db2insthtml locale

where locale is the desired locale; for example, locale=en_US for English.

  5. From your Web browser, open the following URL to view DB2 online manuals:
       file:/usr/lpp/db2_05_00/doc/en_US/html/index.htm

To recover some disk space, you may want to remove the compressed-tar files for DB2 books in HTML format. It is recommended that you do not just remove the compressed-tar HTML files. Instead, you should remove the fileset for the DB2 Product Library.

After the fileset is removed, only compressed-tar files will be removed. You will still be able to view the online DB2 books.

Installing DB2 Product Messages (Optional)

When you install DB2 products using the SMIT, DB2 Product messages for locales, other than En_US (English or United States code page IBM-850) are not automatically installed.

To install messages for non-English locales, do the following:

  1. From the Install/Update Selectable Software (Custom Install) menu, select Install/Update From All Available Software.

  2. Enter the directory, where you want to install the translated messages, for the INPUT device/directory for software For example, if /cdrom is the CD-ROM mount directory, enter the following as the INPUT device:
       /cdrom/db2

  3. List the software products to be installed using the SOFTWARE to install option.

  4. Select the messages options for the locales you want to install.

    note

The message options are listed as follows:
    DB2 Product Messages - locale

where locale is the desired local; for example, locale=Fr_FR for French in France with the IBM-850 code set.
